Pick Your Challenge and Let's have some Fun

There's still time to register for the Spinal Network Challenge, it runs from June 1st and will end on June 30th. You can register to participate in a 5K, 10K, marathon, a fitness challenge, a book reading challenge or a volunteer hour challenge. Want to customize your own challenge, that option is also available. The swag that each participant receives will play into our photo contest....include your pet and submit the photo, participate wearing a costume of your choice and submit the photo.....let's make this a fun event, after all, given the last 12 months, we all deserve some fun.

Registration for the 30-Day Challenge is still open
Greetings!

We've been so focused on our 30-Day Virtual Challenge that we may not have explained why? First, we all thought that given the pandemic and the isolation of the past several months we wanted to give people a virtual playground where we can all go and just have some fun. From the feedback that I've received after the first full week of the Challenge, it seems like it's working.

Secondly, the monies raised by the 30-Day Challenge will give us the means to launch out Community Outreach program. This program will consist of a number of outdoor and community events where those of us living with paralysis, our families and caregivers, and our friends working in rehabilitation can get together to hike an accessible trail, to get together for a BBQ or potluck, or to try out indoor skydiving. We will team up with our friends from Palms to Pines for a day of adaptive sports and recreation (click the Palms to Pines link to find out more about the organization). Getting out with family and friends to Get Life!

There is still time to register for the Spinal Network Virtual 30-Day Challenge. You can click on this link to register. https://runsignup.com/Race/CA/Anywhere/SpinalNetworkChallenge

We've tried to include something for everyone, if you enjoy the walk, roll, run, bike or swim, then the 5K, 10K or full marathon might be for you. Not sure you could complete this type of challenge, you will have the entire month of June to do it. Not a distance person, then maybe the fitness challenge (you decide what that would entail) or the book reading challenge or maybe it's the volunteer hour challenge. If nothing here excites you and you have an idea for a personal challenge, register for the event and click on the custom tab, set your own goals. This event is the ultimate example of inclusion.

We want this to be fun because let's face it, we all deserve some fun right about now. There will be a costume photo contest (dress up while working on your challenge) and a best pet photo contest (put the bandana from your swag box on your pet and take them along while working on your challenge).

You can participate individually or get some friends together and register as a team.

Sincerely,

Rick Hayden
Executive Director

Assistive Technology Loan Closet
Spinal Network's Assistive Technology Loan Closet will become a reality and sooner than we anticipated. We just received word that our request for funding had been approved. We will collaborate with the Department of Rehabilitation (DOR) as well as Social Securities PASS program to off the installation, training and possible purchase of the various devices. The goal? Provide the means by which an individual can access the devices necessary to attend college or enter the workplace. If you have a need and you are interested, send me an email so that I can keep you updated on the program launch.

The conversation will be light and those hanging out will be the very coolest...but that goes without saying.
