the ocean side of San Mateo County. The drive ought to take about half an hour. Of course, in October the trajectory can be a good deal longer because you'll be in the crush along two-lane Highway 92 heading for the coast-side pumpkin patches.
Sitting in traffic may not be your idea of fun times. So it's good that there's another, and from a mariner's perspective, better way to make the trip: Sail.
That's what six Spinnaker Sailing members and two instructors did a few weeks ago aboard the club's Beneteau 39 Hurricane.

As we start the month of November, we are again reminded of the changing conditions here on the Bay.
It is a great time of the year for students to get out on the Bay to enjoy the lighter winds and smaller waves. We encourage our beginner sailors to take advantage of these ideal conditions to practice their skills and develop confidence. For those with some experience, we challenge you to take the more advanced Spinnaker class.
When planning your next sail, keep in mind a few differences from the warmer months:
WEATHER CONDITIONS:
The winds have a tendency to shut down earlier in the afternoon. You may have to motor back to the marina. If the currents are against you, it could take longer to return than you are accustomed to. Be sure to check the forecast weather, tides and currents, and keep track of time and your location on the Bay to give yourself plenty of time to return safely in daylight hours.
The winds that start from the south will normally shift to the west as the system moves through. A good time to get out sailing can be on the back side of these systems when we have a clearing breeze.
You can always call
the office and we'll be happy to give you a local conditions update.
The best time of day to be sailing this time of year is between 1:00 pm and 5:00 pm.
These are just a few of the things to keep in mind when sailing in the Fall and Winter seasons here on the Bay.
TIDES THIS MONTH:
The weekend of
November 4th-6th will have some of the highest and lowest tides of the month. With the higher tidal ranges the currents will also be a stronger. We'll have close to a 10 foot tidal swing in the Redwood City area with a minus 1.0 low tide.
Remember to pay attention to the channel markers and stay well inside them to keep yourself and the boat safe and moving.

Want to learn to sail better?
Start teaching!
Seminar - Becoming an Instructor
Thursday, November 30th -
6:00pm
Spinnaker Sailing School
While teaching others to sail, you'll find that as a result, you become a better sailor. When you are explaining fundamentals, demonstrating skills, and correcting student errors you are in fact refining your own understanding and skills.
You'll see and understand common mistakes and learn to anticipate things in advance. You'll also develop an acute sense of how the boat is moving through the water by its motion, heel, and response.
If you would enjoy sharing your knowledge with beginner sailors, this is a great way to get more sailing time, and give back to the community. You should have at least 3 years of sailing experience as skipper. We will provide you with the training and coaching to become a successful instructor. Spinnaker Sailing will be hosting a seminar to explain what it would take to become an instructor and help you prepare to start teaching students.
Bob Diamond (ASA Instructor qualifier) runs ASA Instructor certification clinics to get you certified. Once certified you'll be a part of a team of over 30 instructors, all working together to help make sailing safe, fun and rewarding to our community. We offer part-time, flexible schedules. To find out more call the office or
join us on November 30th at 6:00 pm at the school office.

Host your next corporate teambuilding with Spinnaker!
Take advantage of the year round sailing conditions of the South Bay! November is the optimal time for newbies to give sailing a try. This month is notable for moderate winds and fewer boats out on the water.
Spinnaker customizes sailing activities that bring people together in a safe, fun, and affordable way. Whether it's a sailing regatta or a skippered charter, this is an effective way to build camaraderie, improve interpersonal communication, and increase collaboration.
