Spinning into Summer

As June comes to a close and summer begins, we hope Bike Month helped you discover a new route, ride with a friend, or simply spend more time outside on two wheels. The longer days are just getting started, and there are plenty of opportunities ahead to ride, connect with other bike-minded people, and enjoy Tahoe by bike all summer long.

Dial Your Bike For Summer - Attend our Free Bike Kitchens!

Wednesday, July 15: 4:30-7 p.m. at South Lake Tahoe Library

Stop by the South Lake Tahoe Library the third Wednesday of the month from May to October to keep your bike in gear. Mechanics will be on site to help you tune up your bike at these FREE community bike kitchens!

A big thank you to Barton Health for generously offering free bike fits at the last two Bike Kitchen events at the South Lake Tahoe Library.

Your support helped riders of all ages get set up more comfortably and safely on their bikes—making a real difference in confidence and enjoyment on the road and trail. We’re grateful for the partnership and for helping more people in our community ride better and ride more.

New Bike Path: Martis Valley Trail

The Martis Valley Trail ribbon cutting was held on June 3, marking the culmination of 18 years of planning and partnership to bring this project to life. The new 4.6-mile paved multi-use trail connects Northstar Village through Martis Valley to Truckee, seamlessly linking into the town’s growing trail network.

This connection is a key milestone in the broader resort triangle vision—a future 42-mile loop linking Tahoe City, Kings Beach, and Truckee via Northstar.

Go ride the fresh asphalt, take in the sweeping Martis Valley views, and experience this incredible new connection firsthand!

The Bijou Connector Trail ribbon cutting ceremony was held on June 24. This new trail will connect the Al Tahoe Mobility Project with the Dennis T. Machida Memorial Greenway through Bijou Community Park. The new trail will improve access to neighborhoods, schools, public facilities, commercial areas, and recreational areas, making it safer and easier for residents and visitors to move throughout the community.

Biking to School, Safely

As more Lake Tahoe students bike, walk, and ride e-bikes to school, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition launched a Safe Routes to School pilot program that brought bicycle safety education to hundreds of fourth-grade students across the Lake Tahoe Unified School District. Using the National Safe Routes to School curriculum, students learned about helmet safety, signaling, visibility, bike handling, and the rules of the road. The program reached hundreds of students through classroom lessons, bike rodeos, and Bike to School events, culminating in 466 students participating in Bike and Walk to School Week. We hope to build on the pilot by establishing a full-time Safe Rides to School Coordinator to make biking safer and more accessible for families throughout the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Support the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition!

We are an all-volunteer non-profit organization founded in 2005 with the mission to make Tahoe more bicycle-friendly.

We advocate year-round for additional and improved bike paths and lanes by working with local jurisdictions and agencies and raising funds and providing volunteers to make biking safer and more enjoyable. Join today!
