Holy Spirit Parish Weekly Newsletter

Three feast days this week honor saints who were very close to Our Lord Jesus on earth: St. James the Apostles who was with Him at the Transfiguration and in Gethsemane, Jesus's Grandparents Sts. Joachim and Anne, and Jesus's friend Martha, sister of Lazarus.

We also celebrate St. Peter Chrysologus, who had the interesting job of ministering to his flock while simultaneously trying to win over local pagans as well as Christian heretics. (in many ways - that is similar to our situation today.)

Don't Forget -

2) RSVP for the Parish Picnic (THIS SATURDAY!)

Here is your weekly update for what's going on in the parish.

Monday, July 25th

St. James

James, the brother of John the Evangelist, was the first Apostle to be martyred. He was beheaded by order of Herod of Agrippa. The Gospels tell us that the two brothers left their father, Zebedee, and followed Jesus as soon as He called out to them.

Son of Thunder, Holy Martyr

Tuesday, July 26th

Sts. Anne and Joachim

On July 26 the Roman Catholic Church commemorates the parents of the Virgin Mary, Saints Joachim and Anne. The couple's faith and perseverance brought them through the sorrow of childlessness, to the joy of conceiving and raising the immaculate and sinless woman who would give birth to Christ.

St. Martha

"Jesus loved Martha, and her sister Mary, and Lazarus" (John 11:5). Saint Martha is mentioned in three Gospel passages: Luke 10:38-42, John 11:1-53, and John 12:1-9, and the type of friendship between her and her siblings, Mary and Lazarus, with the Lord Jesus is evident in these passages.

Saturday, July 30th

St. Peter Chrysologus

St. Peter Chrysologus ministered in a recently Christianized society, meaning he had to reach out to faithful Catholics, the remaining pagans, and newly minted heretics.

Some Thoughts for Reflection

Do you take this for granted?

Dr. Scott Han in three minutes gives cradle Catholics who take the Eucharist for granted a (gentle but inspiring) wakeup call.

How Can You BelieveThis?

What Does the Church Say About Gun Control?

In both legal courts and the court of public opinion, gun rights advocates have been making significant advances. In 2008, the U.S. Supreme Court held that the second amendment entails an individual right to possess a firearm for lawful purposes, including self-defense within one's home. Public opinion has also shifted in recent years.

"Legitimate Diversity of Opinion"

What's So Bad About Contraception? Just This.

So, as a new Catholic, my curiosity was sparked. What exactly are the Catholic Church's arguments against the use of contraceptives? About a year after joining the Catholic Church, I heard about a Catholic educational program for women called Endow.

Is the Church Out of Touch? Or is there more to this?

"We can definitely talk about those policies, but the question is, is the solution to children in foster care to kill them? No one would argue in our society that because a child is in foster care therefore their life is unworthy of living. And that’s the point we’re making in the Pro-Life movement every single day when we argue for protection at conception."

Kristan Hawkins

President of Students for Life, responding to a CNN commentator on her Pro-Life work.
