Holy Spirit Parish Weekly Newsletter

We kick off the week with Labor Day. It's Mother Mary's Birthday on Thursday, and on Friday we celebrate a man who gave up comfort and ease to become the "slave of the slaves".

This coming weekend, we also honor and pray for those we lost in 9/11, and also will be having the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick during all our weekend masses.

Here is your weekly update for what's going on in the parish.

Happy Labor Day!

Make time today to reflect on the dignity and gift of work. (Great article on this below.)

PLEASE NOTE - There is NO Mass at Holy Spirit on Labor Day, Monday September 5th.

Morning Mass will be at St. Joseph Parish (Avon Lake) at 8:00 AM.

PLEASE NOTE - The Parish Office is Closed in observance of Labor Day.

Birth of Mary

When Was Mary Born?

Most saints we celebrate when they died, because that is their birthday into heaven.

The Church pulls out all the stops though for God's Mother, in part because understanding how God worked through her helps us understand the miracle and magnitude of the Incarnation of Jesus.

St. Peter Claver

Who was St. Peter Claver?

September 9 marks the Feast of St. Peter Claver, a Jesuit priest who ministered to African slaves in Colombia in the 17th century. The U.S. bishops have invited Catholics to observe the day with fasting and prayer for an end to racism in the United States.

Who was this "Slave of the Slaves?"

Saturday, September 10th

Parents of children anticipating reception of First Communion in May 2023 should attend this meeting!

Meeting will last about 30 minutes

Program Registration Forms will be distributed at the meeting.

Please Note:

Children planning to receive First Communion need to be enrolled in the Preparation Program in addition to PSR or a Catholic elementary school.

Admission to the Preparation Program requires at least one year of formal faith formation prior to the current year (generally understood to be Grade 1 PSR or Catholic school). A child lacking this prior faith formation may be delayed in receiving First Communion until adequate preliminary preparation has been completed.

Some Thoughts for Reflection

The Limits of Forgiveness

September 11th, the Clerical Sex Scandals, and other such events can bring up two extremes in Catholics - the un-Christlike refusal to forgive, and the equally un-Christlike hippy attitude that anger is never justified.

How do we navigate between these two extremes?

What Forgiveness Is - and Isn't

How to Handle a Bad Sexual Past

"She came to a similar conclusion as mine above: she had been lied to. Being promiscuous didn’t bring her happiness, and what hurt most in the process of living out her own sexual revolution was that she had lied to herself. She did not feel good about the entire thing, and she was not okay."

"But faith comes to our aid at these times when words seem to fail. Christ's word is the only one that can give a response to the questions which trouble our spirit. Even if the forces of darkness appear to prevail, those who believe in God know that evil and death do not have the final say. Christian hope is based on this truth; at this time our prayerful trust draws strength from it."
