From Pastor Kevin's Desk

August 11th marked one year since I began my call as pastor at Spirit of Hope. What a year it has been! I am grateful for the many ways we have shared in the mission and ministry of our congregation together.

Over the past year, we have gathered for worship, studied scripture, welcomed new members, served our neighbors, shared meals, cared for one another, and walked together through moments of celebration, grief, and change. Through it all, God has continued to gather us around Word and Sacrament.

Personally, I have spent much time learning the history and rhythms of Spirit of Hope, listening to the stories of this congregations and witnessing the many gifts that are shared in this place. Together, we have also begun identifying how we continue to develop and grow the mission and ministry of this congregation.

I am thankful to all who serve in the many “behind the scenes” ways in our community. People prepare the sanctuary, provide music, operate technology, teach, lead, counter offerings, care for our property, organize fellowship, support outreach, and tend to countless needs that may not always be visible. To all who serve and generously support all that happens here: thank you!

As we enter another year together, I am hopeful about what lies ahead. This hope rests in Christ, who continues to gather, renew, and send us forth for the sake of the world.

Thank you for welcoming me and my family into the life of Spirit of Hope. We deeply appreciate your prayers, encouragement, patience, and partnership throughout this first year.

9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance

Desert Ridge High School will be hosting the 9/11 Day of Service on Saturday, September 12th from 9AM to 11AM. There are a variety of service projects that will be offered. 

Lutheran Social Services of the Southwest (LSS-SW) Presentation at Spirit of Hope

On Tuesday, September 8th at 12PM, we will have Ruth Escobar from LSS–SW with us to share about the ministries happening through their organization. This is an opportunity for members of SoH to hear more about one of our ministry partners and how our support for them comes to life in a variety of ways!

Sack Lunch Summer Ministry

Our sack lunch summer ministry will conclude on August 27th. Volunteers have spent time each Thursday this summer making and packing 100 punches for those in need. Representatives from Community Medical Services pick up and deliver the lunches to those in need around the Mesa area.

Organizing the Narthex - Committee Chairs Take a Look!

The Evangelism Committee will be cleaning up our Information Desk and the cabinets in the area. Ministry leaders and committee chairs, please stop by the Information Desk the week of August 24th to see if any of the supplies in the cabinets belong to the ministry you serve and if those items are still needed. Thank you!

Sound Booth Volunteers Needed for Saturday AND Sunday Worship!

We are in need of volunteers to help run our sound booth at BOTH Saturday and Sunday worship. The main job will consist of advancing slides! If you have any interest in serving in this way, please reach out! We would be glad to answer any questions. We will take time to train all volunteers appropriately.

We are in need of folks to help maintain our facilities. Our Facilities Committee is looking for those who would be willing to serve to help maintain our buildings and campus in a variety of ways. Please let us know if you would be willing to help.

If you receive any requests like this, please use caution, do not respond, and you can verify the request by contacting the church office.

We live in a time where we must be diligent and aware of the requests that are being made to us. Mesa has offered some resources and guidance that might help us in our endeavor to be wise, you can view them by clicking here. Bible Study with Pastor Kevin

Pastor's bible study meets on Tuesday mornings at 10:30 AM in the Large Classroom. We take a closer look at the Old Testament reading and the Gospel reading for the upcoming Sunday.

Bible Study – “Too Big For Starbuck’s”

Thursday Morning Bible Study on Summer Hiatus until September

Our Thursday morning bible study will take off for the summer. The last meeting for this group will be on 4/30/26. The study will resume on 9/3/26 and they will be taking a closer look at the book of Jeremiah.

Women's Thursday Afternoon Bible Study

This bible study is held on Thursday afternoons at 1:00 PM in the church classroom.

New members are always welcome as together we grow in God’s GRACE and LOVE.

Signing up for Fry's Community Rewards is a straightforward process. Follow these steps to get started:

• Enter your email and create a password.
• Select 'Use Card Number' to link your Shopper’s Card.

2. Register for Community Rewards

• After creating your account, log in.
• Navigate to the Community Rewards section.

3. Start Shopping

• When you shop at Fry's, scan your VIP card or enter your phone number.
• A portion of your purchases will be donated to your selected organization automatically

Did You Know???

The Grand Canyon Synod (which Spirit of Hope is part of) is a very active community of 89 churches in Arizona, Nevada and Utah. There is always much going on. The Synod has a website that posts all the news of the synod. The link to the website is here: Grand Canyon Synod of the ELCA and if you click on "News" in the toolbar, you will find a link called "Get Our Newsletter". The Bishop's office puts out a weekly newsletter chock full of GCS happenings! And you can have it sent right to your email!

When you get a chance, take a look and see all the good things happening in Our Church!

Spirit of Hope communicates electronically in many ways!

First - this newsletter is created weekly! You can receive it electronically via email or view the current newsletter on the Church Website www.spiritofhopelutheran.com on the Home Page. You can register to receive the newsletter on the main church website page - www.spiritofhopelutheran.com. Click on the "Click Here to Subscribe to Our Weekly E-Newsletter" button on the Home Page

Second - Our website has so much useful information and is a great source of all things Spirit of Hope. You can see what's going on, view the 9:30 church service live, or view past services, or find a list of helpful resources.

Third - Spirit of Hope has TWO Facebook pages! One is public and you can find it by searching in Facebook for Spirit of Hope Lutheran Church. Don't forget to click on "Follow". The other Facebook page is PRIVATE, meaning you need to request access or be invited. Search for Spirit of Hope and/or contact Tina Gilson with questions (tinag963@gmail.com).

Fourth- the church website has an app for your phone! In the Apple App Store or Play the Android Play Store and search for the "Our Church" app. Once downloaded you will be prompted to search for your church. You will have the church website in a phone-friendly format at your fingertips! Pretty cool, huh?
