From Pastor Kevin's Desk

Spirit of Hope Lutheran Church community,

Scammer alert! We have seen a few requests from scammers pretending to be “Pastor Kevin.” Please know, I will never ask for the church directory or for money, especially via email. If you receive any requests like this, please use caution, do not respond, and you can verify the request by contacting the church office.

We live in a time where we must be diligent and aware of the requests that are being made to us. Mesa has offered some resources and guidance that might help us in our endeavor to be wise, you can view them by clicking here. The Grand Canyon Synod has also directed congregations to resources that you can view here.

I will be on vacation and out of the office July 9-13. I will be back in the office on July 14.

We encourage you to ensure your contact information is up-to-date with Spirit of Hope.

Mortgage Reduction Campaign: Debt Reduction Leads to Mission Expansion

The Mortgage Reduction Campaign continues at Spirit of Hope. The Stewardship Committee has set forth a goal of reducing the principal balance by $100,000 in 2026 through designated giving. The campaign has reached approximately 40% of its goal. Thank you for your generosity and your consideration to participate in this campaign.

As of the end of May 2026, the remaining balance of our mortgage was $591,076. Spirit of Hope’s mortgage is held with Thrivent Financial and is rewritten every 10 years through an Adjustable-Rate Loan. Our loan will be rewritten at the end of the 2026 with a new rate. Additional dollars paid to the principal before the re-write can help reduce our monthly payment and make a dollar-for-dollar savings impact on future interest that will be owed. The way our loan is structured, this is a once-in-a-10-year opportunity.

Ultimately, reducing, and the eventual payoff of, our mortgage will free dollars to be used for the mission and ministry present at Spirit of Hope and beyond. In summary: Debt reduction leads to mission expansion.

The Stewardship Committee and the council want the congregation to know this is an ask above and beyond the regular giving that sustains the everyday life and ministry of Spirit of Hope. We all want to say, “Thank you!” for your regular giving, and we encourage you to consider participating in this campaign. Should you choose to participate, you can give online by giving directly to the Mortgage Reduction fund, indicate “Mortgage reduction” on envelopes for checks and cash, and by directing distributions from your retirement accounts to Spirit of Hope.

A link is provided at the top of the newsletter showing monthly progress.

Please reach out if you have any questions.

Our Seniors Rock Group makes sack lunches every week, Mid-

May through August. Community Medical Service distributes

this food and water to our homeless in Mesa.

Hello everyone. Wendy here from Seniors Rock. Just wanted to share an update. Our Thursday sandwich making is going smoothly. Every week we make 100 lunches for those in need. We’ve got our peanut butter spreaders, our jelly crew, and our baggers all working together.

Each lunch includes a sandwich, fresh fruit, a couple of snacks, and a new Bible verse. Thanks to your generous donations, we’re also able to add a bottle of water.

If you’d like to help, we can always use jam. We go through about 4 jars each week.

Thank you all so much. God bless you!

An Invitation to Discern Your Call to Serve

Do you sense God may be calling you to serve in new or deeper ways—but aren’t sure what that looks like?

The Grand Canyon Synod Growing in Faith / Diakonia Program invites you to explore that call through a two‑year journey of faith formation, learning, and service, designed especially for people with full lives—work, family, and church commitments included.

Diakonia is not about adding “one more thing” to your schedule.

It is about growing intentionally in faith, discerning your gifts, and learning how God may be inviting you to use them in the church and the world.

This program is for:

  • Lay people seeking deeper spiritual formation
  • Those discerning ministry or leadership roles
  • Anyone longing to connect faith with daily life and service

If you are curious, you are invited to learn more through a Zoom information session or explore upcoming retreats as a first step.

Online Information Sessions led by Tina Gilson will be held:

The Grand Canyon Synod (which Spirit of Hope is part of) is a very active community of 89 churches in Arizona, Nevada and Utah. There is always much going on. The Synod has a website that posts all the news of the synod. The link to the website is here: Grand Canyon Synod of the ELCA and if you click on "News" in the toolbar, you will find a link called "Get Our Newsletter". The Bishop's office puts out a weekly newsletter chock full of GCS happenings! And you can have it sent right to your email!

When you get a chance, take a look and see all the good things happening in Our Church!

Spirit of Hope communicates electronically in many ways!

First - this newsletter is created weekly! You can receive it electronically via email or view the current newsletter on the Church Website www.spiritofhopelutheran.com on the Home Page. You can register to receive the newsletter on the main church website page - www.spiritofhopelutheran.com. Click on the "Click Here to Subscribe to Our Weekly E-Newsletter" button on the Home Page

Second - Our website has so much useful information and is a great source of all things Spirit of Hope. You can see what's going on, view the 9:30 church service live, or view past services, or find a list of helpful resources.

Third - Spirit of Hope has TWO Facebook pages! One is public and you can find it by searching in Facebook for Spirit of Hope Lutheran Church. Don't forget to click on "Follow". The other Facebook page is PRIVATE, meaning you need to request access or be invited. Search for Spirit of Hope and/or contact Tina Gilson with questions (tinag963@gmail.com).

Fourth- the church website has an app for your phone! In the Apple App Store or Play the Android Play Store and search for the "Our Church" app. Once downloaded you will be prompted to search for your church.
