November 15th, 2020 Council update

As we prepare for the end of the year, we should all remember to give thanks to God for all the blessings God has given to each of us. This past year has brought about many challenges for the church. As a church body we all play a vital role in maintaining the operations of the church.  As a council we are asking that you please consider increasing your offerings to continue the vital ministries of Spirit of Hope.
If you would like a detailed report of the financial statements for the year, please contact the church office.

We had our November council meeting this Thursday. The main topic of the meeting was our finances. We have started planning for 2021, but we need to get through 2020 first. As you know, Mary Beth took on the responsibility of Treasurer this year and she knows where every dollar is going, and this information has allowed us to cut every expense we can out of our operations. Earlier this year we made the tough decision to eliminate the administrator’s job. We have also stopped all spending on our in-house youth programs. Mary Beth has put together an absolute bare bones budget for us to follow, and we for the most part have kept our spending under that budget. But it hasn’t been enough. As you know, you can eliminate your expenses, but you still need to pay the utility bills and the mortgage. This year we have spent $259,400 versus $300,000 last year at this point. This includes some large unplanned repairs to the roof, plumbing and the AC units. Just this week our phone system failed. We hope to get this covered by our insurance, but it will still cost us $1000. If not covered, it will be $2000.

Each month we need $24,500 to keep the doors open. For most of this year, we have been bringing just under $20,000. That leaves us about $60,000 short for 2020. Our church had a reserve as we entered the year, but that reserve is shrinking rapidly. To put it bluntly, we need to bring in more donations to cover our cost and make up the deficit. We are asking you to look at your own finances and find a way to make a commitment to our church. Without your help, our reserves will be depleted within the next year.

To maximize your donation, dropping off a check or mailing it in doesn’t cost us anything. If you do electronic pay, choose the EFT directly from your checking account. This is a 1% fee versus a 3.5% fee for debit and credit cards. So far this year our processing fees are over $1,800. If you do cash, check, or EFT, this will eliminate most of this cost, which means more money for the church. Also, please donate to the general fund as this is how we pay our bills. If you donate to a specific fund, that money cannot be used for any other purpose.
Please do what you can to help us make up this deficit as quickly as possible.

Thanks
Duane Gilson, President

Generosity

Have you ever been affected by generosity? Either giving or receiving? Maybe you paid for someone’s groceries or gas? Or maybe someone blessed you? Who doesn’t have a story? Maybe it was that year of the Christmas Miracle?

If you ever have been helped by a generosity, or been on the giving end, we want to hear your story! The Grand Canyon Synod is having a Generosity Film Festival! This is your chance to share your story, or stories if you have more than one. Maybe you will inspire someone else to be generous. Maybe your story of being on the receiving end will bring hope to someone else in need. Either way, it is the perfect way to help our mission: Make Christ Known!

If you need a hand telling your story, we can help. If you are shy, we can help. If you need a camera, or someone to hold it, we can help! Let’s make Spirit of Hope the Red-Carpet Masters at the first annual Generosity Film Festival. Maybe you will win a valuable price! Maybe you will just have fun! Or maybe, just maybe, you will inspire other to be more generous, and that would be the greatest reward of all.

Email: [email protected] or [email protected] with any questions or if you need help.
Let’s have some fun with this!

Thanks!
Duane J Gilson

Home Communion

With COVID-19 and wanting to remain safe, I can understand why members are not comfortable about attending in person worship services. I can also understand that there are those who have missed receiving Holy Communiond so therefore, I am extending this invitation.

If you are an at risk member who would like to have the Pastor bring Holy Communion to your home, please call the church office ( 480-396-8300) and request / schedule a home communion visit. Pastor Tony will bring communion wearing a mask, medical gloves, and practicing social distancing. If it is a nice day, perhaps we can be outside.

The home communion visits will be scheduled for late mornings or in the afternoon.
