Yay! We have a new, beautiful candle stand- thanks to the SOH Woodworkers.

Lutheran churches may use votive candles which may be lit at home, as a part of personal or family devotions, or at the church. They are usually lit on the altar rails, or in front of the altar cross.

Candles are lit in churches for many reasons, including symbolizing faith, hope, and unity. They can also be lit to remember loved ones or to show gratitude to God.

Symbolism

  • Light of Christ: Candles represent Jesus' words, "I am the light of the world".
  • Prayer: Candles represent prayers offered to God.
  • Unity: Candles represent the unity of the congregation.
  • Hope: Candles represent hope and a beacon of light in difficult times.
  • Gratitude: Candles can be lit to express gratitude to God for answered prayers.

The light of the candle signifies our prayer, which is offered in faith, entering the light of God. It also shows reverence and our desire to remain present in prayer even as we continue our day.

Lighting one candle can suffice for more than one intention. We ask that candles be lit before the service or on your way back from communion, so it is not a distraction to the rest of the service.

A beacon of love, a shining light Spirit of Hope,

guides us through the night

A place of refuge, where hearts can heal

Where kindness and compassion, forever reveal.

With open arms, you welcome all

A haven of peace, where love stands tall Your generosity

a blessing to share A community united, with love and care

In times of need, you lend a hand

A helping spirit, that forever stands

Your heart beats with kindness, your soul with grace

A reflection of God's love, in every single place

Spirit of Hope, a treasure so rare

A church that shines, with love beyond compare

May your light continue, to guide and inspire

A beacon of hope, that forever aspires."
