I found that many people don't realize how great a tool astrology can be for determining not just the timing of matters but sometimes how profoundly meaningful they can be in a person's life. We're talking about energy patterns, of course - their onset, their duration, and their finale. But these energy patterns represent life events, sometimes of the major sort. These energy patterns can also offer insight into how a person can react emotionally and psychologically to whatever they portray.
An example is the recent diagnosis given to my son who has been struggling to defeat renal cancer for the last year and a half, whereby the update that just came through was not good. In lieu of handwringing or that awkward inability to know the right thing to say, I was able as an astrologer to look again at his horoscope and see energy patterns ahead that were both favorable and for awhile intense, leaving me to conclude that a new round of treatments might be difficult but that there was strong blessing ahead. Realistically, what would such an interpretation convey? Seeing a tough winter but a bright spring, I concluded that a new approach to treatment might be problematic to endure but effective.
When people face such a crisis, even a skeptic will be happy to hear the equivalent of hope. This is not pie-in-the-sky hope; these are future energy patterns that have through the ages proven to accurately forecast a period of improvement. Astrology isn't fortune-telling; it's an art that has a mathematical basis, and it works. When the practitioner uses the tool right, it's accurate - a fact that has been proven to myself by its usage over 45 years.
Now, sometimes the tool sees a period of challenge, and when used wisely that period being described to the client or their loved ones offers choice. Choice is very, very important to us - what actions we take, how we frame the story in our minds, and how we react emotionally to the information. Sometimes, choice can be the difference between life and death! An informed choice - which can include research - but when combined with the interpretation of upcoming astrological patterns, can be so empowering.
Free will is everything in life, and more than most, astrology teaches us to make those choices wisely.
I gave my son hope because I saw hope. I saw improvement. I saw "the light at the end of the tunnel." This would be apparent to any other practiced astrologer who knew the basic usage of the tool. Astrology is one of our most useful tools because it puts the control of the narrative back into one's hands, saying you can be the creator instead of fate's pawn.
Next month there may not be an issue of Spirit's Words. I'll be on hiatus, so I'm wishing you a Happy Fall,

Many people view retirement as their brass ring, their reward for decades of laboring, and they imagine their retirement to be a pleasant dream of sleeping in, pursuing hobbies, playing golf, travel, and so forth. Most of this is certainly a possibility, and the dream carries lots of weight relative to the amount of dislike they have for their job. People who find their livelihood to be full of tension and stress, or tedious and uncreative, or boring and purposeless yearn for the day that it's all behind them, and then they are free regarding their hours of the day and their "golden" years. But often the reality is a shocking disappointment!
Much of a person's identity might be tied up in their job title and their responsibilities. They may find themselves in a place where their ego has been undermined or their self-esteem has been diminished by this loss of identity, regardless of how unappealing their labor was. And then they flounder about, sometimes for months but often for years, seeking purpose... a replacement for what their job had offered. This period of confusion, diminished self-esteem, and little reason to wake up and face the day, can and does lead to health-related issues that may not be attributed simply to aging but to psychological issues. All of this can be circumvented.
How? By doing what you love and monetizing it. If your livelihood entails an inner purpose, a thrilling effort towards personal achievement of the satisfying kind, or better still, helping other people, then you have no desire to retire.
No desire to retire! If you love what you do, it has been said, the money will follow. Well, sometimes - especially if you make a scary leap from a secure paycheck with a pension or benefits to self-employment - it doesn't always swiftly fall into place and leave you with million$! It requires courage; it requires discipline; it requires application of your skills. But if you make that transition and spend your working years doing what you love, retirement becomes a non-issue. Only ability determines when to stop, when to leave off, when to quit.
Meanwhile, a purpose-driven livelihood, no matter how big or small your success is, can never undermine your identity or self-esteem. You are the winner, and you can keep going doing what you do for the love of it, into your later years, as much or as little as you choose. We can call this semi-retirement. But really it should have a different title altogether because the person who works at what he/she loves segues into the latter years as a very different type than what we usually call "retired" or "semi-retired". This is a goal worth pursuing.

"The Congress" -(Le
Congrès in French) - 2013
I'm not sure if this movie went straight to Netflix, or ever made it to the big screen. It was certainly one of the strangest pictures I've seen in years, because it became almost psychedelic in the second half.
The movie has some very big-name actors including Robin Wright as an almost-over-the-hill-actress (supposedly playing herself), Harvey Keitel as her agent, Paul Giamatti as her therapist, and Jon Hamm as a film writer. The story revolves around a science fiction-like concept, that studios are now able to capture the image, body language, and style of actors, thereby cleverly offering a deal to an actor requiring that the actor give over their digital selves in all ways to a studio in exchange for a big money payout. But the caveat is that they can no longer do any acting whatsoever including as trivial as a kid's school play. This is obviously a Faustian bargain with the devil!
Playing "herself", Robin Wright is told she is losing her movie panache, will soon no longer command high fees, and must think of her dependents including a son who has an unusual deteriorating sickness. And so, feeling boxed into a corner, she accepts the arrangement.
We then see her emotions and body being scanned by an array of electrodes and lights in a type of laboratory for filmmakers, after which the movie takes a decidedly weird turn. Suddenly, we see her driving down an unnamed road in a convertible, and briefly seeing her new animated image in her rear-view mirror. A gatekeeper warns her that there is no way out of the world she is about to drive into except through this same gate, and she accepts an ampule which she inhales... after which the movie becomes an acid trip!
Her edgily cartoonish alternate-alternate self now enters a gaudily colored surreal world and encounters a variety of bizarre characters constantly morphing, including Jesus, Michael Jackson, and Marilyn Monroe, and a slew of trippy other characters. She has a strange romance with her cartoon film writer who attempts to rescue her from several bizarre cartoon predicaments. After much time spent in this odd universe, she manages to find her virtual doctor/therapist who gives her another ampule so that she can leave the alternate universe in order to find and help her dying son who has been lost to her in the meantime.
Here is where the film takes an unexplained and really confusing leap: she doesn't return to the contemporary California she had just left, but to a dystopia where hordes of real people in dirty rags march forward like zombies because the world is now really messed up. (We never learn why.) She manages to reunite with her son in a vague way, and the movie tapers off.
There are aspects of this theme that could be very interesting to explore. For example, how the business of Hollywood would be turned on its ear if it no longer needed the services of real human actors but could use their images (called "samples") in any way it wished including porn. The movie does not explore the possible uses of these actor-samples. Also, Robin's avatar is not shown either in a natural 3-dimensional human form (an example of which she was briefly pitched in the studio) nor as a hologram. Other than constantly-changing psychedelic-poster-like environments that stupefy rather than fascinate, the only way the actors' expensive sample is used is in this bizarre cartoonish manner. Oddest of all, why must she agree to live inside this virtual reality instead of just staying at home, knitting?!
What could have been a deep philosophical exploration of technology affecting the entertainment industry, offering the viewers truly new ways of engaging in this medium, we are left dissatisfied and perplexed. It feels like a big waste of some terrific talent although the imagery is cool.

Teachings of The Brotherhood of Light Workers
By Judi Thomases
The following segment has been received, word for word through a psychic process known as channeling. It is an invited procedure. The teachings always serve to guide
us through the journey of life. Compilations of many such messages are available in book, PDF and audio formats:
Compilation of BoLW's Messages
If you stop to think about it, there is only one way to help the world, and that is to help yourself. How does one help oneself? It comes from an inner place; it comes from the development of an interior sight and also an interior strength, for just as you exercise your physical muscles (hopefully daily), you can and must learn to "exercise" an inner muscle. It is called by different names, for example, self-discipline, or resilience. In the face of pain and suffering, an inner muscle can be strengthened to face the day again, to bounce back from the pain or challenge, and to thus build up self-esteem, for once a person has made contact within, and realizes that this type of strength can be and is developing, a certain good or nice feeling takes over.
This feeling, which has been named empowerment but is also simply the recognition that one has control over one's fate insofar as how one reacts to one's circumstances, gives one the assurance that surviving to a brighter day is possible, which in turn becomes the new alignment. This has been called aspiration or hope but it is also the certain knowledge that nothing external can stop the accumulation of this inner strength, the development of this inner muscle.
He or she who realizes and owns this type of strength is seen as powerful and even magnetic, and gains the admiration of others, which in turn adds to the person's self-esteem or self-respect. No one else can exercise this interior muscle and build this interior power, only you.
When you help yourself in this fashion, you then help the world because if the whole population of the world felt this way, people would not lapse into despair or act self-destructively. One at a time, and then many, and ultimately entire societies can learn how to strengthen within, to resist destructive behavior, avoid negativity, and brighten their identity.
That is what helps the world.
