Prayer for a New Year of Spiritual Formation

O Lord our God, we give thanks for the people in this community of faith who use their gifts to teach, to volunteer, to help behind the scenes, to set up tables, to help clean up. As we begin a new year of spiritual formation and learning, may we use the minds you have given us to learn more deeply, may we use our hands you have given us to carry out significant tasks for others; may we use our wills to respond in obedience to your purposes for this world. Let our worship of you this day broaden our appreciation of those who share in our life together here, and let our worship deepen our faith through the teachings of Jesus Christ our Lord, in whose name we pray. Amen.

Adult Classes

“Genesis” September 8-November 24 | Phifer Library

Led by Michael O’Keefe, Larry Hamric, Richard Ashmore, Donna Ryan, Pat Widhalm, Beth Poe, and Neale Miller

The Bible’s first book contains many well-known stories, some familiar since childhood: creation and the garden of Eden; an ark full of animals adrift in a flood; Abraham and Isaac; the conniving Jacob; and the dreams of Joseph. Now hear these stories again in a new way, and in hearing, discover the knowledge that God created everything in goodness and love. Whether in the heights of paradise or the depths of exile, the human journey is never far from the presence of God.

“Faith at Home: A Handbook for Cautiously Christian Parents”

September 8 - November 24 | 2nd floor conference room | Led by Tyler Wheeler

As parents, we strive to help our children develop a strong moral foundation, including a strong understanding of Christian faith. With so many contradictions from mainstream culture, however, many parents are left feeling as though religious language is a foreign language and are unsure how to incorporate faith practices into family life. Faith at Home aims to help parents learn this “second language” and introduce it to children in simple and meaningful ways. How do we introduce prayer to our children if we do not necessarily believe prayer changes outcome? How do we approach reading the Bible with our children when our own relationship with it is mixed or complicated? How do we connect what happens at church to what happens at home?

Youth & Children

Youth Sunday School (grades 6-12) meets in the Youth Room on the 3rd floor and occasionally on Instagram @scapc_youth.

The Challenger Class (grades 4-5) meets in a special room on the 2nd floor that is set up with sofas and chairs where students can explore their faith, ask questions, and begin to verbalize what they believe. This year’s class topics include the ten commandments, a communion workshop, what it means to be a Presbyterian, and the Lord’s Prayer.

Three-year-olds through 3rd graders gather by age group for classes that focus on hands-on learning. They are divided into three groups: 3 yrs to PreK, Kindergarten-1st grade, and 2nd-3rd grade, all meeting in rooms on the 2nd floor. They engage in Bible stories through activities, interactive games, and creative crafts. Throughout the year we explore stories from the Old and New Testaments. Weekly lessons help kids navigate the stories and begin to compare what they learn to their own lives.

The Nursery for ages 0-3 is open 8:15-11:45 a.m. in the Bear Classroom which is the corner classroom on the first floor.

"Theology Thursday" Returns

The Theology Thursday Study Group, led by Senior Pastor Chris Currie, will resume their meetings on Thursday, September 12, 12:15-1:30 p.m. in the second floor conference room. Our first study will be on The Sisters of Sinai: How Two Lady Adventurers Discovered the Hidden Gospels by Janet Soskice.

Named as one of the best books of the year in 2009, The Sisters of Sinai is an adventure story about two Presbyterian sisters from Scotland who made one of the most important Biblical discoveries in the Victorian era. Soskice tells this story within the context of biblical scholarship and other challenging ideas and discoveries of that era which provides a lot of material for rich discussions.

Books are available for order through local bookstores or Amazon. The first assignment for the group is the Prologue through Chapter Two (from title page to page 21). Any questions can be directed to miriam@scapc.org.
