Jonathan became one in spirit with David
and loved as he loved himself.

I Samuel 18:1

No longer do I call you servants, but I have you friends,  for
all that I have heard from my Father, I have made known to you.

John 15:15

Spiritual Friends

Reflection Questions
  • How well am I being truly present to my friends
  • How well do I listen attentively to my friends?
  • What can I see, affirm, and call forth that my friend may not know about himself or herself?
  • In what ways can I be the "arms and voice of God" to my friends?
Spiritual Practices
  • Name the spiritual friends in your life, past and present.
  • Ask God how He might lead you to great vulnerability and honesty in your friendships.
  • Spend time praying for and thanking God for your friends.
  • Ask God to deepen your bonds of affection and trust with your friends.

If you are blessed to have one or more genuine spiritual friendships, be sure to thank God, because friendships are a gift . . . They are a means by which God reveals his goodness by helping us to know others and ourselves and thereby know him.  Friendship is a gift God gives to us.  it is a gift we can give to others.
David Benner

Most of us have friends . . . but the best kind of friend are "soul friends."  These are people with whom I can be forthcoming and honest about my own soul.  In return, they reflect God's love for me in their words, their attitudes, and their actions.  These are friends who "enflesh" God for me.  God loves and nourishes my soul through these friends.

What a Friend We Have in Jesus

Alan Jackson - What A Friend We Have In Jesus (Live)

O God, thank you for calling me your friend.  My heart is filled with gratitude that Christ is the most trusted friend I could ever know.  There is none other as faithful, more loving, more caring, and more precious as He.   Thank you, Lord, for the spiritual friendships that you have used to reach my life. Teach me, Lord, to be a good spiritual companion.  In the name of Jesus, who is closer than a brother.  Amen.

Our Core Practices

Christ has no body on earth but yours, no hands but yours, no feet but yours.  Yours are the eyes through which Christ's compassion for the world is to look out; yours are the feet with which He is to go about doing good; and yours are the hands with which He is to bless us now.
