Spiritual training requires a plan and execution.

“So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.” – Colossians 2:6-7 (NIV)

It seems like only yesterday that I was in my high school weight room pumping iron with the music cranked at a deafening level.

Throughout my athletic career, the thousands of hours I spent in the weight room as a high school, college, and professional athlete paid off. I wanted to excel in my sport.

Lifting weights built me up and strengthened me to be the best athlete I could be. The muscle I added helped me perform better and kept me from injury.

Paul writes a powerful truth in Colossians 2:7 — as followers of Christ we need to be “strengthened in the faith.” The Lord desires for us to develop spiritual muscles by hitting the spiritual weight room. In 1 Timothy 4:7, Paul challenges us: “Train yourself to be godly.” He's not suggesting it. He's commanding it. Producing some spiritual sweat always pays off.

What does it mean to be strong in the Lord?

When I'm in the weight room, I have a detailed, specific workout routine. No plan, no progress.

We need the same thing spiritually. God desires for us to invest the time to develop spiritual muscles — not for your gain, but for His glory!

  1. How is your physical training like your spiritual training? How is it different?
  2. What's one thing you need to add to your spiritual routine today?

This week, write out a specific spiritual training plan: what you'll read, when you'll pray, and who will hold you accountable – then execute it daily.
