ARTS LETTER

MAY 2026

SPLASH INTO THE ARTS THIS SPRING

Over the past year, DAC has been engaged in an ambitious program of renewal. We’ve consulted widely with local artists and arts organizations, researched other successful rural arts councils, recruited energetic new board members, and developed a new vision, new tools, and a new action plan – all geared to serving and promoting Dufferin’s dynamic arts community.

Whether you’re an artist or arts enthusiast, if you want to keep your finger on the creative pulse of our community, we hope you’ll check out our lively website for a calendar of local events and workshops, a directory of local artists, plus scholarships and other funding opportunities.

And stay tuned to future issues of this newsletter for invitations to some exciting events DAC will be hosting over the coming months.

Together with you, we look forward to an exciting year in local arts!

AFTER 5 ART SALONS

DAC is excited to be launching a series of informal, after-work gatherings, where you can unwind with a glass of wine and appetizers, and hear from guest artists who will share their creative experiences and answer your questions.

First up, meet forensic art sleuth Alison Douglas.

In her fascinating work as art conservator at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, Alison has come to know many of Canada’s iconic painters in microscopic detail.

Meet, mingle, enjoy and learn on Tuesday, June 16, starting at 5pm at Hockley Community Hall in Hockley Village. Tickets are $25, including beverage. Registration is required.

REMINDER: DAC members' tour of the McMichael Canadian Art Collection

If you haven’t yet signed up for the special members’ tour of the McMichael gallery on May 27, there’s still time to register, but act soon, tickets are going fast.

APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP AND GRANT FUNDS BY MAY 31

Listen to James Gerus’ podcast interview with musician and composer Taras Petryk, a 2025 Anne Laurier Scholarship recipient.

Anne Laurier Scholarship

DAC has supported arts students via the Anne Laurier Scholarship since 1996. Three $3,000 awards are available annually to graduating students who are pursuing post-secondary studies in the arts. DAC reaches out to area high schools to promote awareness of the opportunity.

Do you know a possible recipient? Share the opportunity and support our future artists. See our past recipients and current application details here.

Community Projects Fund

Another way DAC grows and supports the local arts ecosystem is through our Community Projects Fund. Up to $2,000 in funding is available for projects or events. See the application details here.

FOR PATRICIA VEGA, CREATIVITY IS A TACTILE ART

From her Mansfield studio, Patricia Vega creates and explores a tapestry of fine art and craft, including printmaking, cyanotype and mixed media.

I am continually captivated by the diverse ways in which form, texture and process come together,” says Patricia, whose printmaking techniques include etching, drypoint and lithography. “My artistic journey is deeply rooted in traditional crafts, which is why I find myself drawn to tactile precision.”

More recently, she has turned her attention to cyanotype, which she describes as “a collaboration with the natural world” in which “art and science meet.” The process involves placing objects on paper or cloth treated with a photo-sensitive solution and exposing it to the sun to create negative white images on a brilliant Prussian blue background. In addition to her fine art, Patricia employs the technique to create one-of-a- kind silk scarves, cards and paperweights, available from her online Bohemian in Blue Shop.

Patricia also offers workshops on using the cyanotype technique on paper or fabric. See “Workshops” below for details. She welcomes commissions and artistic collaborations.

BROADWAY GETS ITS GROOVE ON WITH THE SOUND OF MUSIC

The venerable Orangeville Blues & Jazz Festival is once more gearing up to take over Broadway for a full weekend of musical excitement from June 5-7.

Here’s a couple of ways you can get in the mood beforehand: Grab your instrument, or just grab a beer, and enjoy the free Jam Night, every Thursday at the Broadway Beat in Orangeville. And it’s coming up fast, but you can still get tickets for the Gala Concert that wraps up the Orangeville & District Music Festival at the landmark Westminster United Church on May 11. The Festival has been showcasing local musical talent of all ages since 1998.
