YOUTH CONNECTIONS

2018
Dear Boys & Girls Club of the Redwoods Supporter:
http://givebgc.org/
Summer is just around the corner! This school year absolutely flew by and we are so happy to see the strides that all of our members have made this year. We would like to take this moment to give a hearty congratulations to all of our graduating seniors for the hard work they have put in over their academic careers. Some will continue on with post-secondary education, some will enter the work force, while others may choose to enter the armed forces. All of our graduating Club Members, now Club Almuni, have shown themselves to be incredibly confident and competent members of our community that will go on to be responsible, caring, and productive citizens, on their way to a Great Future. We would like to extend a tremendous thank you to everyone that has helped get these Members from the Clubhouse to the graduation stage, whether you are a parent, volunteer, staff member, board member, donor, community partner, or just a community supporter. The support and compassion from all of you is what has pushed our members to their Great Future. Congratulations Class of 2018!

Sincerely, Monica Rose, Executive Director

MemorableMoments

National Police Week Visit

Our Clubhouse members got the chance to take a special tour of the Eureka Police Department for National Police Week, May 13th-19th! Members baked cookies to give to members of the police department, and then received a tour through the facility, with pit stops to meet Police Chief Watson,  detectives, and to see the inside of the police vehicles. Members even received a gift from Chief Watson; EPD fidget spinners!

McKinleyville Middle Invades the Club!

The McKinleyville Middle School kids got to round out their long week of California Standards Testing (CST's), with a trip to the McKinleyville Teen Center. While there, youth were able to unwind and play games of pool and Foosball, while learning about the new and fun programs that will take place over the summer at the Club.
Rethink Your Drink

May 16th was Rethink Your Drink Day, a statewide day of action in California to raise awareness of the health effects of sugary drinks. The Eureka Teen Center took to this challenge by promoting drinking water through an infused water bar. Members got to choose between a variety of fruits and herbs to infuse into their water, and were taught the exactly how much sugar they were putting into their bodies when they drink sodas, energy drinks, and sports drinks. The infused water bar was an amazing hit with our teens, and we can't wait to participate next year!

Second Chances Art Show: A Smashing Success!

Teen Court held their sole fundraising event of the year, the Second Chances Art Show, on May 5th, at the Ink People. The art show this year featured youth creatively addressing personal growth, transformation, and the issues that teens are facing today. Major underwriting for the event was provided by Jonathan and Erin Flyer, and the Humboldt County Bar Association. We would like to thank everyone that came out to see the show, and to all the artists that contributed!

SMART Girls:
Giving Girls Confidence

SMART Girls is one of the most popular and long standing programs at the Club.  SMART Girls is a small-group health, fitness, prevention/education and self-esteem enhancement program designed to meet the developmental needs of girls in three age groups, spanning ages 8 to 18. Through dynamic sessions, participatory activities, field trips and mentoring opportunities with adult women, Club girls explore their own and societal attitudes and values as they build skills for eating right, staying physically fit, getting good health care and developing positive relationships with peers and adults. Our Eureka Clubhouse, Eureka Teen Center, and McKinleyville Teen Center all run SMART Girls in small groups. The Clubhouse has been focused on community service and encouraging strong relationships with adult women, as well as Clubhouse peers. The Eureka Teen Center SMART Girls group has been taking field trips to learn self-defense, and the McKinleyville Teen Center group has been working on diversity and inclusion. All together, these groups are giving girls the confidence to face the ever-changing world around them.
