Splinters
by Mother Rebecca
On Tuesday, I noticed a prickling feeling on the edge of my right pointer finger. I’d been rubbing on it for most of the day, when my brain finally engaged with the dawning understanding that something was wrong. Bringing my hand toward my face and turning to allow light to shine on my finger, I readily realized what was causing the sensation. A splinter of wood had lodged itself into the layers of my skin. I’d love to be able to tell you where it came from, but I do not truly know. What I do know is that how the splinter got into my skin was far less important to me on Tuesday afternoon than how I could get it out. That was an arduous and painful process, leaving my skin even more irritated after the procedure than it was when the splinter was lodged in place. It’s taken the better part of the week for the skin to come back together – for healing and wholeness to return.
I tell you this story, because this incident – the lodging of the tiniest fragment of wood into the skin of the pointer finger on my right hand – had me reflecting all week long. At first, these reflections seemed mere mundane musings: how is it possible that something so small can create such huge pain and take so long to heal? I soon realized these musings were far from mundane. Anyone who’s ever been in relationship with another human being knows that the smallest of things – an eye roll, a murmur, an oversight – can cause deep and prolonged pain and lead to a splintering of relationship that takes a long time to heal.
All these reflections on splinters led me to the Sermon on the Mount, recorded in Chapters 5 through 7 of Matthew’s Gospel. If you haven’t read these chapters lately, please pull out your Bible and read them afresh this week. Because in the Sermon on the Mount, we meet ...

EMF Fish Fry & Silent Auction
This Weekend
Bidding opens at 4:30pm on Sunday for this year's auction. Join us in Roper Hall for fish 'n' chips, games and all sorts of fun as we try to reach our $75,000 fundraising target for grants to Fig ministries and other local causes.
All bidding is online using your own mobile device, so please visit the auction website in advance, register if you're new to it, check your information if you used it in 2023, and enter a valid credit card so that you can bid. We recommend downloading the Auctria app to your phone (leave Notifications ON so that the system will notify you if someone outbids you), but you can use your browser if you prefer by going to this link: auctria.com/auction/emf2025
At 6:00pm there will be a short live auction of some very special items, with a special guest auctioneer.
Attending in person: Entry is $10 per person or $25 for a family. Buy tickets in advance on the website or pay at the door. Four door prizes of $100 HEB gift cards will be drawn during the evening.
Can't be there in person? You'll miss a lot of fun, but you can still bid from home or from your vacation spot anywhere in the world through the website. You can also make a donation - all donations made will be matched by the EMF up to $10,000 and given equally to the children and youth ministries.
| |
You can also browse the auction catalog on the website, which features hundreds of items, including more than 30 fantastic parties and trips, with more items being added daily. Come and find yourself a bargain!
Additionally, EMF will be accepting donations for the auction until 5:30pm on May 31, so there’s still time to organize a party or contribute items. For assistance with donations, contact Jim Kirkman (972-814-6742).

Join us as we work together in the Church Office Lobby from 10:00am to 1:30pm. We provide writing materials, stamps, suggestions and addresses. Please join us as you're able!

Summer Formation
The Book of Common Prayer
Join Fr. Michael Merriman beginning next Sunday morning, June 8 for a class on the development of The Book of Common Prayer (1979).
Fr. Michael was a consultant to the Standing Liturgical Commission from 1973 to 1979 and also participated in the creation of the original Book of Occasional Services. During that period he was also the Chair of the Liturgical Commission of the Diocese of Dallas. After serving on congregations in Texas, California, Minnesota, and Australia (serving as chair of the diocesan liturgical commissions in all of those places), he served as Assisting Priest at the Fig from 2004 to 2016.
This class will provide a rich overview of the origins of our prayer book and where The Episcopal Church could choose to go from here.
