UC San Diego at the Forefront on the Fight Against COVID-19
UC San Diego’s commitment to transforming lives and society through multidisciplinary research, as articulated in the campus’ Strategic Plan , is more apparent than ever as researchers lead the way in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
Engineers and doctors at UC San Diego are partnering to design and build ventilators using 3d-printing , addressing one of the key challenges of the COVID-19 outbreak. Led by James Friend, a professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Department of Surgery, and Lonnie Petersen , an assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and adjunct with UC San Diego Health and a team of graduate students, this project aims to meet the potential shortage of medical devices while also building capacity in the clinical setting.

UC San Diego Health is also leading the way with pioneering treatment, launching a clinical trial to assess the safety and efficacy of antiviral drug remdesivir for use against COVID-19. Constance Benson professor of medicine and co-principal investigator of the 75-site global study, points to the adaptive study design as a means for rapidly adding a treatment protocol if the Gilead Sciences antiviral drug proves effective.
Additionally, Robert Schooley, M.D., co-director of the Center for Innovative Phage Applications and Therapeutics and Faculty Director of Global Education at UC San Diego shared in a City of San Diego Press Conference that UC San Diego Health is working with Inovio, Arcturus and other San Diego biotech companies on developing vaccines and conducting vaccine trials.
