Spontaneous Remission of Cancer

What To Do When Doctors Tell You There Are No More Options:

Dialling up a miracle when needed is not a realistic and achievable option. And yet we have all heard stories of health-related miracles occurring.

Some people turn to religion and prayer when confronted by a serious health matter. Some turn to alternative and/or non-Western forms of healthcare and healing.

At RCM Health we have responded to patients requests and values by incorporating things like prayer circles into care plans, or supporting patients without any further medical options in seeking these supports.

And sometimes miracles do occur.

Case Study:

James was 26 years of age.

After years of drinking 26 ounces of vodka daily, he developed acute liver failure.

He was admitted to hospital but got worse.

With the help of one of our psychologists, we organized a prayer circle with a convent of retired nuns.

On a Friday about 3 weeks into the admission, he got much worse and received last rites.

I called the hospital on Saturday morning to find out what time he had died. To my surprise, the nurse told me that he woke up and his vital signs were improved.

He went on to became an addiction therapist.

Beliefs Can Change Biology:

Interestingly, there is new research demonstrating that a person's thoughts and beliefs may be able to impact their biology.

This research focuses on a description of changes in immune status, hormones, and metabolic measures. It appears to be demonstrating that a person's beliefs and thoughts can change biology.

How does this apply to patients with cancer?

Cancer and Spontaneous Remission:

Spontaneous remission of cancer refers to the unexpected disappearance of a malignant tumour in the absence of conventional treatment or when treatment is considered inadequate to account for the tumour’s regression. This phenomenon, though rare, has been documented across various types of cancer and has intrigued researchers for many years.

About 30 years ago in a course at Harvard Medical School on Behavioural Health, the lecturer presented on spontaneous remission commenting that in over 200 cases where this was observed, a commonality amongst the patients was their intention to get better and their elevated states of hope. Since then this topic has been of great interest in the potential it represents.

There is new research being conducted on the relationship between thought, emotions, and cancer. It demonstrates that immune cells, such as natural killer cells, roam around the body in search of cancer cells. These immune cells have their radio channels turned on, and have neuro-receptors on their surface that appear to be responding to what is going on in a patient’s mind. This information is then broadcast to the immune system.

It seems possible that our emotions talk to our immune system and that positive emotions can have positive and unexpected outcomes, including spontaneous remission of cancer.

We look forward to continuing to follow this emerging research and the hope it represents.
