To all our friends...86th Annual Tely 10..

This coming weekend Sunday July 28th, the 86th Annual Tely 10 will be happening. The total  number of runners and walkers for this year's event will be over 3000!

Volunteer road marshals/flaggers - In speaking with Race Director, Randy Ball therre is a need for 12 to 15 more volunteer road marshals for the Mount Pearl segment of the race.  The Mount Pearl segment of the race runs for about two hours from 8 to 10 AM. ...many of you know Randy for his officiating with basketball, volleyball and competitive swimming.

What a great way to be involved with this historic Newfoundland sports event!  This could be an excellent project for a service club, sports team, other community groups, or anyone who wants to get a little closer to the race.

Each road marshal is assigned to street corners along Topsail Road to ensure barricades are kept in place and neighborhood vehicle traffic doesn't come onto Topsail Road.  Road marshals are kitted out in an official Tely 10 Volunteer Shirt and safety vest.

Think you might like to help out?  Maybe you have a group who would like to be involved?  Give us a shout at the Alliance office 748-6489 or e-mail Karen at kfinn@mountpearl.ca .  Let's show that Mount Pearl community spirit!!

We look forward to hearing from you.

Mike

It was a great week for soccer in both Corner Brook and PEI for the NL U13 and U14 soccer teams.

The U13 boys provincial team beat Nova Scotia 2-0 to earn the gold medal, thanks to goals from Jacob Grant and Gary McKeown  and the Head Coach was Andrew Murphy. The U13 girls fell just short in their final, losing 3-2 to Nova Scotia, goals from Kate Hickey and MPSA's Ashley Stratton  and the Head Coach  was Aoife Bodman.

The U14 boys and girls are both Atlantic silver medalists after 2 heartbreaking shootout loses to Nova Scotia. Both games were tied 0-0 after regulation. Head Coaches Mike Power (BU14), and Nicole Moores (GU14) are quite proud of their teams performance.

Stellar representation from MPSA players and coaches who contributed to the success of the provincial teams.

Helping kids Beat the Heat ...

When we play sport sweat is produced to cool the body. Children generally sweat less than adults and therefore lose less heat. This means children are less tolerant to exercising in warm weather for prolonged periods of time.

The Sports Hall of Fame takes a stride forward...

History has a way of going by the wayside when it is not written down for future generations, and our work over the summer on the Sports Hall of Fame will see to it that the history of sports in Mount Pearl remains front and center.

We are in the process of putting biographies and photos of all Sports Hall of Fame inductees and Honour Roll teams on the web, making them accessible to everyone. Samantha Griffin has joined the Sport Alliance staff team for the summer. Samanatha  is meeting with local groups and individuals, and is busy researching and writing so that we may better share this important history with the community. VOLUNTEER DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE

We all know how important volunteers are when it comes to organization and program development that is fundimental for healthy communities. Volunteers play a critical role day after day, and year after year. But, we also know times are changing and we need to understand the challenges that our city's aging demographics create and how to respond.

The Sport Alliance is coordinating a new volunteer initiative to increase communication and resources in the youth sport community and among all non-profit community groups in order to strenghten our community's volunteer base and volunteer leadership in years to come.

As a community, Mount Pearl is well positions to become somewhat of a centre of excellance for volunteer management and development.  We think to volunteer initiative can play a vital role with imput and shared expertise by our sports community.
