2020 Volume: Edition 10
To our Sport for Life champions,

Now is the time to be thinking outside the box. The sport, recreation, health and education sectors have all had to innovate in order to address this pandemic. The work done across these sectors is more important than ever, as it becomes more difficult to host traditional quality sport and physical literacy programming. We’ve been amazed by how quickly so many of you have adapted to digital delivery, and come up with creative ways to keep participants moving, and we applaud these successes. We’re attempting to do the same by delivering our first-ever virtual Summit in January.

In this newsletter you can read about some of the exciting Long-Term Development work being done by national sport organizations such as Swimming Canada, about the latest developments in the world of PLAYBuilder, and about how schools in Quebec are embracing physical literacy.

Swimming Canada embraces transformative athlete development philosophy

Swimming is one of the most popular sports in Canada.

For the last eight years, our country has been routinely churning out Olympic and Paralympic athletes who have made a splash in the international scene.

Much of this success stems from the work of John Atkinson, Swimming Canada’s Director of High Performance, who has been fine-tuning their athlete pathway incrementally since taking the reins following the 2012 Olympics. And now the organization has announced the launch of an innovative new athlete development philosophy.

Quebec secondary school launches innovative sport program

Following the recent announcement of its official launch, the Sport 3D program and its designers have already been attracting a lot of interest from the sport sector over the past few weeks, including from media outlets such as Radio-Canada. Led by Sébastien Ouellet and five facilitators from Juvénat Notre-Dame du Saint-Laurent Secondary School, the innovative approach of this program seems to be addressing a definite need.

“After Radio-Canada columnist Martin Leclerc’s article, many people have shown curiosity. It’s also sparked a strong interest from future students,” said Ouellet. “We are very pleased with the response from everyone. It reassures us of the direction we’re taking.”

Summit goes virtual for 2021

When the 2021 Virtual Sport for Life Canadian Summit takes place at the end of January, it will be accessible to anyone worldwide with an Internet connection. This is an unprecedented opportunity to reach people regardless of their ability to attend the in-person event. We’re also excited to offer an expanded two-day francophone program.

For the first time, delegates will get the chance to hear from leading experts such as Dr. Véronique Richard. With seven keynotes, 95 presentations and 1000+ anticipated attendees, it promises to be one of our most impactful Summits yet.

Coaching our colleagues through COVID-19

I never really envisioned my life beyond age 35.

When I successfully tied the knot with my wife Kristina earlier this year, just in time for my daughter Celista’s screaming arrival on March 27, I realized that against the odds I’d accomplished nearly every goal I’ve ever set for myself. After a series of mental health struggles that resulted in a month-long psych ward stay in January, I was looking at piecing together a future from a relatively blank slate — in the midst of a global pandemic.

The mission is to promote and support active, healthy lifestyles through the development of physical education, recreation, and sport at all levels of the educational system.

#CommonwealthMoves initiative mobilizes PLAYBuilder content

This year’s pandemic brought a lot of people’s lives to a grinding halt, and the Commonwealth Moves initiative wants to get them moving again.

The Commonwealth Secretariat has teamed up with organizations like Sport for Life to reboot the sector in this new COVID-19 reality, and is promoting PLAYBuilder as a key tool in the rebuilding process.
