To our Sport for Life champions,
During these challenging times, we need each other more than ever.
Whether it means collaborating with your team to address new safety protocols around COVID-19, adapting programming to align with Long-Term Development, or creating new opportunities for newcomers to Canada, we’re all doing our best to touch the lives of those around us.
In this newsletter you can read about the work Canada Soccer is doing to put players first, how the Northwest Territories is using PLAYBuilder to fight sedentary lifestyles, and the latest update from the School Physical Activity and Physical Literacy Project. Also, you'll see a discounted eLearning opportunity, and a chance to register for an upcoming webinar put on by Active for Life and the Government of Canada.

Soccer Canada puts athletes first
It’s about developing good people who contribute to their society.
When Canada Soccer’s Manager of Development–Operations, Dave Nutt, thinks about the long-term development of athletes, his emphasis isn’t on finding the best dribbler or the most talented shooter; instead, he’s fixated on creating the right environment to foster social, emotional and mental health. As the national sport organization continues to implement and fine-tune its Long-Term Player Development framework, he believes their mandate shouldn’t be to exclusively focus on high-performers, but to celebrate each individual player and ensure they’re having a quality sport experience.

Welcoming newcomers with quality sport
Starting over in a new country can be extremely difficult.
That's why Sport for Life pitched the Building More Movement and Social Connection for Newcomers Project to the City of Victoria, as part of their annual Participatory Budgeting contest — spearheaded by our Senior Manager of Operations Kabir Hosein. If successfully selected, our organization plans to identify and reduce/eliminate barriers to key services and supports with a primary focus on easy-to-access physical activity and social connection opportunities that many newcomers lack when they first arrive in Canada.

One of the resources we use for our work with families new to our country is Sport for Life for all Newcomers to Canada. It outlines the barriers that newcomers may face in their participation of sport and physical activity, and then provides examples of solutions and opportunities that exist, as well as promising practices of work being done across Canada.
By 2030, immigration will account for all of Canada's net population growth. Cities across Canada are being transformed by immigration, and these demographic trends will undoubtedly impact the Canadian sport and physical activity system.
