Yacht News August 25

Tuesday’s activities at the pond included three Dragon skippers. Results are too easy to write: Steve Stopa was third in each race, Tony DiFilippis finished second, but none could catch Dick Denzler who crossed the finish line first in each of the four races. The course started at the red/blue marks at the east end of the pond, sailing to the far end port on yellow and four, up north to the 3 mark, rounding red and 1, then to the middle port on 2 and home to the blue/red finish. Nirvanas had eight skippers. Harry Howard was on fire with three firsts, a second and a third. Hot on his tail were Garrett VanKoughnett (two seconds and a third) and Ray Cook (a second and three thirds). Not to be left out was Ken Bates, a first, two seconds and two fourths. Bruce Blomgren had that last first.

Thursday brought plenty of sunshine and not much wind. Garrett set up the course: Yellow/green start and finish, east around 3 to the far end, then he mixed it up in the middle, dancing with a starboard turn on 3, then port on 2, passing starboard on 4 and to the finish line. Dragon skipper Dick Denzler and
Nirvana skipper Ken Bates had no trouble – they swept the series in their respective classes. Three Dragons competed in just five races. Dick claimed every top spot. Tony DiFilippis had four seconds and a third. Sandy Graham had a second, three thirds and then did not finish (boat troubles which shortened their day). Divisions need six boats for an official race. The Nirvana had six skippers. Ken Bates has jumped to be “the man to beat”. Taking all six races on Thursday, he now has 8 first place finishes in the last ten races, moving up rapidly in the field. Ray is barely ahead of him in the standings, despite his strong showing of two seconds and two thirds. Bruce Blomgren, Pete Flynn and Tony DeFilippis had a bunch of seconds and thirds.
Present Standings for the Summer Series are::
Nirvana Fleet
Harry Howard .895
Mark Hamer .884
Garett VanKoughnett .868
Ray Cook .834
Ken Bates .827
Dragon 95's
Dick Denzler .972
Mark Hamer .820
Sandy Graham .809
Tony DeFilippis .788
