Golden State Warriors host S.T.E.M. Fair
The Golden State Warriors, in partnership with Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), hosted a Local Warriors event on Wednesday, March 6 at the Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose. The event focused on S.T.E.M. programs and activities with 50 young women from CORAL, an after-school extended literacy program, and Rise University Preparatory, an independent middle and high school making top quality education accessible to the Bayview-Hunters Point community. Warriors guard Quinn Cook was again one of the featured speakers.
The event was part of the Warriors' 2019 Women's Empowerment Month campaign, which includes a variety of in-arena activities and community efforts to empower, inspire and highlight women in the community.

Oakland Raiders -- Mike Mayock & Antonio Brown
New general manger Mike Mayock was credited with being a critical factor in bringing Antonio Brown, the Steelers' ultra-talented receiver, into the Oakland Raiders fold. Said the receiver's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, "Mayock is a talented general manager and a tough negotiator. He did a good job. You would've thought he was a veteran NFL general manger. He was very sharp and very professional." The finalized three-year contract will pay the disgruntled star $50.125 million, instead of the $38.925 million he is presently owed by Pittsburgh. In exchange, the Steelers will receive third and fifth-round draft picks from Oakland. Brown is not new to the Bay Area and appeared at the Coliseum (above) on December 9 of last year in a 24-21 Raiders win. In the game, Brown caught five passes for 35 yards.

When asked how he created the statue of David, Michelangelo replied, "David was inside the stone. I just chipped away all the pieces that weren't David."
He may not be Michelangelo's equal as a sculptor but we do have a true genius in our midst when it comes to IK (Institutional Knowledge). Sports, Music, Bay Area history, the lives of four-legged creatures who run for the roses and the two-legged creatures who feed them, muck them, ride them, train and own them.
Are you stuck on this question?
Name the baseball player who:
* Won the Triple Crown for baseball players, not thoroughbreds
* 14 time All-Star
* Was a Gold Glover
* NL & AL MVP
* Home Run hitter with 586 round-trippers
* World Series MVP
* Played for five teams and managed four
* Tormented Krazy Crab
* Manager of the Year
Or how about:
* Where Joe DiMaggio liked to hang out and what the Yankee Clipper ate during
all the time
he spent in the Bay Area?
* Best Bay Area musicians ever?
* Places that all the VIPs liked to hang out at that no longer exist?
* Best Bay Area sports writers...and so on!
Many of you will head to Google, Wikipedia, or maybe ask HAL from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
No need. When I'm stumped or the Great Gary Radnich has no answer for listeners on his KNBR radio show, The Man with the Plan and the Answer, along with a story to go with each
and every factoid, is Sam.
I just use a highly developed new piece of multi-digital technology called the telephone. It's an amazing device soon to be in stores near you. From time to time I might default to a finger exercise and type in SPEARPEDIA.
Want the real skinny? Just get in touch with Sam Spear. He makes a Cray super computer
seem like a Playskool abacus.
Sam Spear started the telecast,
At The Races, for Golden Gate Fields on Labor Day 41 years ago and hosted it as many as seven days a week and sold the advertising. Health issues forced him to cut down his schedule, but he continues as the track's director of media relations and as host of his Sunday morning radio show,
At the Track, on KNBR 680, airing from 6 to 7 a.m.
There is no better man to call when you don't know up from down, from A to Z,
in the Bay Area than Sam Spear.

San Jose Earthquakes
0 vs. Minnesota United FC
3
SAN JOSE, Calif. -
- The San Jose Earthquakes fell 3-0 to Minnesota United FC on Saturday afternoon at Avaya Stadium. The two teams played a scoreless first half, thanks in large part to a strong performance by Quakes goalkeeper Daniel Vega. Minnesota would then tally a trio of goals in the second frame, including a penalty kick that required video review and an own goal. The Earthquakes now take on the New York Red Bulls at Red Bull Arena on Saturday, March 16 at 12:30 p.m. PT. The match will be broadcast nationally on Univision, as well as on KNBR 1050 (English radio) and 1370 KZSF (Spanish radio). Reprinted courtesy San Jose Earthquakes.

San Francisco Giants -- Spring Training Report
The Giants dropped six of seven games this week in Spring Training, but gave fans a look at the depth of their pitching roster. Two recently signed left-handed pitchers, Drew Pomeranz and Derek Holland, appeared on Wednesday in a 2-0 victory against the Cleveland Indians and combined to toss eight scoreless innings.
The Giants' 29-year-old ace, Madison Bumgarner, made his third start of Spring Training in a 5-1 loss against the Athletics on Thursday and while he gave up five hits and two runs in just over three innings, MadBum reported that he does not place too much stock in his Spring Training performance. Veteran ace Jeff Samardzija appeared in Monday's 8-2 loss to the Dodgers, pitching three scoreless innings. Samardzija also pitched in Sunday's loss to Texas, going 3.2 innings and giving up three hits. This was a good look for Samardzija, who battled a shoulder injury for most of the 2018 season. Giants manager Bruce Bochy commented that he was pleased with Samardzija's performance, which Samardzija himself credits to offseason rehabilitation
and Spring Training work.
Reyes Moronta, coming off his rookie season as a reliever for the Giants, made an anticipated one-inning appearance in the team's 8-0 loss to the Cubs, allowing one run. Moronta, however, displayed a new diversity of pitches, particularly his changeup, showcasing his offseason work. This work and with a subsequent improved pitch diversity, Bochy hopes Moronta will be a continued threat on the mound this season. For the upcoming week the Giants have a game every day and look to improve upon their 5-10 record in the Cactus League this spring.

Oakland A's -- Spring Training Report
The Oakland Athletics announced their Tokyo Opening Day roster amidst a busy seven-game Spring Training week in Arizona. Thirty-three-year-old right-hander Mike Fiers will make his first Opening Day start on the mound against the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday, March 20 and Marco Estrada will start on Thursday, March 21. Fiers was 12-8 in the 2018 season with a 3.56 ERA, and Estrada was 7-14 with a 5.24 ERA. Both games begin at 2:35 AM PDT
and will be broadcast on ESPN.
A's slugger and 2018 MLB home run leader Khris Davis returned to the lineup for his Cactus League debut on Friday against the Padres. Davis, who struggled with a left calf sprain this spring, had an uneventful outing at the plate, with a strikeout and a fly out
.
The Athletics went around the pitching rotation last week and after an off-day on Monday, the A's defeated the Rangers 4-1 on Tuesday, with the win credited to Daniel Mengden (1-2). Wednesday's bout against the Mariners resulted in 7-4 win credited to Brett Anderson (1-0). The A's faced the Giants twice last week, first winning 5-1 on Thursday and then winning 5-4 in walk-off fashion in a Sunday afternoon split squad game. Friday's game against the Padres resulted in a 6-5 win and despite an 11-2 split squad loss to the Brewers on Saturday, the A's two split squad wins on Sunday -- Giants and White Sox -- improved their record to 10-7 in the Cactus League. The team leaves for Japan on Thursday after three more Spring Training games at the start
of the week. (Photo courtesy Oakland A's.)

Sonoma Raceway Rewind:
First NHRA Drag Race, March 8-9, 1969
Fifty years ago Sonoma Raceway hosted it
SONOMA, Calif. (March 7, 2019) --
Professional drag racing made its Sonoma Valley debut 50 years ago, as then-Sears Point Raceway hosted its first drag racing event on a freshly-paved quarter-mile drag strip, March 8-9, 1969.
The San Francisco National Open was sanctioned by the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA), which still sanctions drag racing activity at Sonoma Raceway today. The entry list for the inaugural event included the likes of "Big Daddy" Don Garlits, Jim Davis and Big John Mazmanian.
A promotional brochure from the raceway's first season in 1969 proclaimed, "The drag strip has been designed for the day when the magic of 300 mph will occur.... The most advanced timing and scoring systems available have been installed to make this the finest drag strip in
Northern California."
The raceway would go on to host its second drag race, a Super Stock Drag Meet, April 19-20, as well as multiple SCCA events and its first AMA National Motorcycle Road Race later that year.
Fifty years later, drag racing continues to be a centerpiece of Sonoma Raceway's on-track activity, including 45 days of drag racing slated for 2019. The 10,000-horsepower dragsters of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series have long eclipsed the 300-mph barrier, including the 339.87-mph Funny Car national record set by Robert Hight at Sonoma Raceway in 2017.
Sonoma Raceway 50th Anniversary:
Sonoma Raceway will celebrate 50 years of racing history and memories throughout the 2019 race season. Honoring the raceway's history and memorable moments will be at the heart of the raceway's efforts, including celebrations to mark significant milestones in the raceway's history, signature celebrations at the raceway's major events featuring drivers and legends, and plenty of throwback images and memorabilia.
"Sonoma Raceway's legacy over the last half century covers the spectrum from iconic professional stars to thousands of amateur enthusiast racers who have turned laps on our road course or accelerated down the quarter-mile," said Steve Page, Sonoma Raceway president and general manager. "We look forward to celebrating with all of them in the coming year, and honoring our incredible history."
Race fans are invited to get in on the fun by sharing their personal memories, stories and pictures from events at Sonoma Raceway at
www.sonomaraceway.com/50 or on social media
using the hashtag #Race50noma.

Gabriel Hawkins, one of the Colts' senior leaders, posted a double-double of 16 points, 10 rebounds as part of a valiant comeback effort that fell just short in the CIF Division I State Championship at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento on Mar. 8. Hawkins and the Colts trailed Chino Hills by 14 at the end of three quarters and stormed back to within two before eventually falling 69-63.
