Letters to the Editor
Dear Editor:
Recently, whilst spanning and spinning the radio dial, I misfortunately blundered onto Fox
Sports News where a trio of nitwitidiot jock lovers were balling on while covering a game or
doing an interview, when one, maybe the leader called Guru, suddenly shrieked, "He farted. Did
you hear him fart?" And they howled like a gaggle of addled 13-year-olds. "Let's go back and
hear that."
When I was coming up midcentury, I avidly read the sports pages where the best writing was
considered to be in the words of sports writers, judged to be the standard for all writing
elsewhere. I don't know if this is still the case, I dutifully doubt, and sports writing is not the
most daunting of scribbling, but the difference between the time-taking sports writing then and
immediate radio commentators over the decades is like being hit by a pitcher or a mammoth
defensive end. 'Nuff puked.

On a close play at third base, D-backs infielder Ildemaro Vargas (15) is ruled safe, despite a diving attempt by Pablo Sandoval to apply a tag. The G-Men would fall to Arizona, 10-4, on Saturday, May 25. Photo by Rich Yee.

Starting pitcher Derek Rodriguez contributed two innings of late relief and looked sharp, giving up no hits or walks. Photo by Rich Yee.

In the sixth inning Kevin Pillar drove a line drive into center field and tried to leg out a triple, only to be tagged out at third base by the D-backs Eduardo Escobar.

San Francisco Giants 2 vs. Atlanta Braves 9

San Francisco Giants Report
A promotion during the Braves game on Wednesday, May 22 brought out revered comic book characters.

* * *
The Giants had a rough week at Oracle Park, losing six of seven games.
The talent-laden Atlanta Braves came to San Francisco on Monday and RHP Mike Soroka dealt the Giants a 4-1 loss, allowing just a solo homer from Brandon Crawford in eight innings.
San Francisco earned their sole victory of the week in Tuesday's matchup, as they scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to overcome a 3-1 deficit. In dramatic fashion, Joe Panik hit a walk-off single with two outs to score Kevin Pillar and Mac Williamson, after Crawford had scored on an RBI single from Pillar.
The Braves hit three blasts on Wednesday, ultimately completing a 9-2 rout against pitchers Jeff Samardzija, who allowed six runs over six innings (none earned), and Derek Holland, who surrended three runs over three innings. On Thursday night the Giants were unable to score in extras and fell to the Braves, 5-4, losing the series as well.
The Arizona Diamondbacks arrived in town for Friday night's game, earning a historic victory for all the wrong reasons in the eyes of Giants fans. Not only did their 18-2 rout mark the most runs ever scored in a road game for the D-backs, but it also set an Oracle Park record for the most runs ever allowed. Drew Pomeranz started and allowed five runs before he was pulled after two-and-two-thirds innings. With the meltdown under way, the Giants pitchers allowed nine more earned runs - and thirteen more in total - to close out the historic loss.
San Francisco was unable to bounce back on Saturday afternoon, falling again to a high-octane performance from Arizona, 10-4. Sunday's results were no different, as the Giants fell behind and never mounted a serious threat, losing 6-2 and getting swept at home.
Now with a 21-31 record and in last place in the NL West, the Giants will hopefully get a couple of wins this week as they hit the road to take on the Miami Marlins (16-34) and the Baltimore Orioles (16-37) -- the two worst teams in major league baseball.

Oakland A's 6 vs. Seattle Mariners 5

Oakland A's Report
Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Mike Fiers (50) sits in the dugout before the game against
the Seattle Mariners at Oakland Coliseum on Saturday, May 25
.
* * *
Starting with their recent series sweep in Detroit, the Oakland A's continued their momentum last week, winning six straight and extending their hot streak to nine games.
Last Monday the A's visited Cleveland for a three-game set and were victorious in game one, mashing three homers on their way to a 6-4 victory. Stellar relief pitcher Blake Treinen allowed a run in the ninth but held off the Tribe to earn the save.
Treinen earned another save with Tuesday's 5-3 win, propelled by homers from Mark Canha and Jurickson Profar. Frankie Montas started on Wednesday and tossed six scoreless innings to complete another solid mound outing. Oakland's bats supported his performance as Mark Canha hit another bomb in back-to-back games. With their sixth straight win behind them, the A's headed home to begin a weekend series with the Mariners, starting on Friday.
Despite losing four games against Seattle earlier in the season, including MLB's opening series in Tokyo, the A's won Friday's matchup when Matt Olson smacked a three-run blast in the bottom of the fourth and on the very next pitch Mark Canha hit a jack for the third straight game. Treinen loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth but escaped unharmed to earn another save.
On Saturday the A's rolled for their eighth straight victory, 6-5. With a 6-3 lead heading into the top of the ninth, Treinen endured another shaky finish, allowing two runs before recording the final out. (Treinen's recent shaky outings didn't hurt the team but warrant attention.)
Matt Chapman homered to opposite fields in the first inning on Saturday and Sunday, passing Khris Davis for a team-high 13 home runs on the season. The A's won on Sunday for their ninth straight, 7-1, riding a solid outing from Brett Anderson.
Khris Davis was assigned to the injured list on Friday as he is still recovering from a hip injury sustained in Pittsburgh when he collided with a wall three weeks ago. OF Skye Bolt was recalled again and Bolt made his first start on Sunday, scoring a run in the eighth inning
after getting walked.
Oakland, at 28-25, is now in second place in the AL West and eager to continue their winning ways against the Los Angeles Angels and Houston Astros in their homestand this week.

San Jose Earthquakes 2 vs. Toronto FC 1
Chris Wondolowski celebrates one of his two goals Sunday against Toronto FC
TORONTO, Ont. -- The San Jose Earthquakes defeated Toronto FC 2-1 at BMO Field on Sunday evening. The Earthquakes are now 5-2-2 in their last nine games, their best nine-match stretch since 2015 (8/14/15 - 9/27/15; 5-2-2), while dropping just one of their last seven (4-1-2).
Chris Wondolowski, who tallied four goals last weekend to break Major League Soccer's all-time scoring record, scored both goals for San Jose. Wondolowski's second goal of the match was the eventual game-winner. It marked the 42nd game-winning goal of his career, breaking Landon Donovan's MLS record (41).
Earthquakes midfielder Cristian Espinoza was credited with the assist on both of Wondolowski's goals. He now has six assists this season, including five in his last five appearances,
and three game-winning assists.
The Earthquakes will continue on the road versus D.C. United on Saturday, June 1 (5 p.m. PT; NBCSBA/KNBR 1050/1370 KZSF).

Menlo School-Atherton -- Track
The quintet's efforts essentially won the Central Coast Section Track and Field Championship, spanning all girls divisions. It was a historic team championship that made Menlo the smallest school to win a CCS title. Pretre and Tomkinson, both juniors, led the way with Pretre winning the 1600 meters and taking second in the 800. Tomkinson won that 800 and was third in the 400. Both ran a leg for the second-place finishing 1600 relay team with Louie and Hamilton. Chan, a senior, was third in 100 hurdles and eighth in the 300 hurdles. Louie was seventh in the 200 and 400. Their finishes all picked up valuable points for the Knights. Photo: Ducan Lord.
