San Francisco had a quiet All-Star Game, sending only closer Will Smith to the Midsummer Classic at Progressive Field in Cleveland. Smith gave up a solo home run in his
one-third of an inning of work, which ultimately led to a 4-3 NL defeat.
The Giants returned to action last Friday as they tripped to Miller Park for a three-game weekend bout with the Milwaukee Brewers, seeking their third straight series victory alongside a recent momentum shift around the diamond. Milwaukee proved a tough test in the first matchup, as although the Giants pumped four homers in regulation, both squads headed to the tenth inning tied at 6-6. Buster Posey emerged in the clutch as he cranked a grand slam in the visiting half of the tenth to secure a first-game victory for San Francisco, 10-7.
Saturday resulted in another tight ballgame but several late errors opened the door for a two-out walk-off opportunity, upon which Ben Gamel capitalized with a double. The Giants fell 4-3 to force a rubber match on Sunday.
Thanks to a huge six-run top of the seventh inning the Giants emerged victorious, 8-3, over the Brewers to triumph in their third consecutive series. Starter Tyler Beede turned in a smooth outing on the bump to back up the late offensive explosion, delivering seven Ks over seven complete innings.
The Giants are still in last place in the NL West but they are now just one-and-a-half games behind the San Diego Padres. San Francisco is 8-2 over their last ten outings, showing signs of much-needed improvement in the latter portion of the regular season. As the trade deadline approaches, the fates of stars Madison Bumgarner and Will Smith remain up in the air.
San Francisco seeks their fourth straight series victory as they square off on the road against the Colorado Rockies for a double-header on Monday, to make up for May 8th's postponed game. These are the first two of a four-game bout, before the Giants close out a busy eight-game week with four over the weekend against the New York Mets at Oracle Park.

Oakland A's 5, Chicago White Sox 1

Oakland A's Weekly Report

The All-Star break commanded last week's action in the MLB. Oakland A's star Matt Chapman led off the festivities last Monday in the Home Run Derby at Progressive Field in Cleveland. Chapman faced a tough first-round opponent in budding superstar Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who set a Derby record for most home runs in a single round with 29 to handily defeat Chapman. Chappy roped 13 bombs as his dad fell out of rhythm on the mound. Nonetheless, the Derby was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the father-son duo, who still took solid advantage of their moment
in the spotlight.
In Tuesday's MLB All-Star Game, Chappy and Liam Hendriks each made appearances. Hendriks gave up a solo jack in his only inning of work, but retired the rest of the side with three Ks to contribute to a 4-3 AL victory. Chapman also did his part, walking and scoring a run after coming in for the Astros' standout Alex Bregman.
After a couple of rest days, the Athletics returned to the Oakland Coliseum on Friday to compete in a three-game weekend set against the Chicago White Sox. Mike Fiers was lights-out on the bump to start the series, dealing seven and two-thirds scoreless innings to lead the A's to
a 5-1 triumph.
Saturday afternoon Oakland's offense exploded for an enormous seven-run bottom of the first, as Franklin Barreto, recently recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas, ripped a two-run shot to finish off the early runs. The Athletics rallied for six more throughout the ballgame to dominate and clinch their fifth straight series victory, 13-2.
Seeking a sweep on Sunday, the A's needed late-inning drama to propel themselves to four straight wins. A wild misfire to second by White Sox shortstop Jose Rondon brought Chad Pinder sprinting around the bags to win in walk-off fashion via the error. The A's won a hard-fought matchup, 3-2, for a sweep at home.
The Athletics, now 53-41, are in sole possession of second place in the AL West and half a game ahead of the Cleveland Indians in second place in the AL Wild Card. They hope to stay hot this week as they remain in the Coliseum for a two-game set beginning Tuesday evening with the Seattle Mariners, before heading to Minnesota for a four-game weekend series against the Twins.

CARSON, Calif. -- The San Jose Earthquakes defeated the rival LA Galaxy 3-1 at Dignity Health Sports Park on Friday night, giving the club two multi-goal victories over LA in a span of 14 days. The win propels the Quakes to fourth place in the Western Conference and within three points of second.

After conceding in the second minute and being unable to break through before halftime, the Quakes rebounded to score a trio of goals in a 24-minute span in the second half. Vako and Jackson Yueill each contributed a goal and an assist, while Danny Hoesen scored the game-winner for the second consecutive match.

Sports Prep Star -- Luke Dugger
It would be hard to have a much better June than Luke Dugger had. Just weeks after graduating from high school, Dugger shot a 5-under-par 67 at the Yolo Fliers Club in Woodland to qualify for a spot in the USGA Junior Amateur Championship. One week later he posted a 5-under score of 139 over 36 holes to win the 51st Sacramento County Junior Championships by two strokes over Brady Siravo. Dugger will be hoping July is as sweet as June when he tees it up at the U.S. Junior Amateur Championships at Inverness Golf Club in Toledo, Ohio, from July 17-20. He will play collegiately for Holy Names in the fall. Photo: David Gershon
