In Memoriam -- Cliff Branch
WR Cliff Branch passed away on Saturday in his sleep (August 1, 1948 - August 3, 2019).
A member of all three Oakland Raiders Super Bowl victories, Branch posted phenomenal numbers during his playing days which garnered serious Hall of Fame consideration. Branch was a fan favorite and could be seen at many alumni and fan events. Branch (above, center) is pictured with Raiders executive Morris Bradshaw and his wife at the Biletnikoff Crab Feed of 2017.

San Francisco Giants Weekly Report
Giants shortstop Donovan Solano was the entire Giants offensive on Sunday, Aug. 4 against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field. The hot-hitting infielder (.343) slammed two home runs and accounted for all the Giants scoring as the G-Men fell, 6-2, and dropped back to .500 (56-56). It was Solano's second career multi-homer game. Above, Solano is shown jogging off the field at Oracle Park on Frank Sinatra Night, July 5. Photo by Rich Yee.

After the Giants finished off seven straight series triumphs a week ago to garner the attention of baseball fans everywhere, the Trade Deadline overrode their success story spotlight this past week. Additionally, last-minute trade decisions quelled hometown anxieties over the futures of Madison Bumgarner and Will Smith, who will remain in San Francisco.
Instead, San Francisco sent starter Drew Pomeranz and reliever Ray Black to the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for infield prospect Mauricio Dubon. They continued a flurry of late trades by dealing closer Sam Dyson to the Minnesota Twins for two RHP prospects and an OF prospect. The Giants also added big-league ready second baseman Scooter Gennett to their roster via a trade with the Braves involving Mark Melancon, who waived his no-trade clause.
When all of these moves occurred, the Giants were in Philadelphia, coming off of a 4-2 loss in Tuesday's road matchup. The deadline frenzy seemed to ignite energy in the San Francisco squad, who showed up for a 5-1 triumph to force a rubber match in Philly. This put the Giants in position to win their eighth straight series if victorious on Thursday. Unfortunately Giants starter Dereck Rodriguez was blown up for seven runs over his first three innings of work, leading to a 10-2 Phils win and a series loss for the Giants, their first since June 30.
Giants reliever Reyes Moronta and his bullpen counterparts hurt the Giants in Friday's 5-4 loss to the Colorado Rockies in Denver, allowing three runs in the final four innings of play, to which the San Francisco offense was unable to respond. However, the Giants bounced back on Saturday and forced yet another rubber match, earning a 6-5 victory via a go-ahead double from Buster Posey in the eighth inning. In Sunday's rubber match, Giants starter Tyler Beede allowed five earned over three and two-thirds innings, which was ultimately a fatal blow in a 6-2 defeat.
San Francisco (56-56, third in the NL West, 2.5 GB NL Wild Card) begin a nine-game homestand with seven games this week, starting with the Washington Nationals in a three-game set followed by the Philadelphia Phillies for four through the weekend. This week's matchups are important to determine whether the Giants, after executing a Miracle Month in July (19-6), can ride the Triumph Train in August and give them a shot at October.

Oakland A's Weekly Report
Tale of the Tape -- Oakland's scoreboard at RingCentral Coliseum on Aug. 1 wraps up the A's win over the Milwaukee Brewers while promoting their upcoming game on Aug. 3 against the visiting St. Louis Cardinals.

When the A's acquired a new arm in Homer Bailey as hope brewed for a playoff run in mid-July, there was still a sense that the starting pitching rotation was incomplete. Holes in relief led to the acquisition of lefty reliever Jake Diekman to bolster the A's staff.
This past Wednesday, as the MLB Trade Deadline ticked down on July 31, Oakland came one step closer to filling out their starting arms. Cincinnati Reds' starter Tanner Roark, who held a 6-7 record with a 4.24 ERA and 108 Ks over 110.1 innings this season, made his trip to Oakland via a deadline-scraping trade involving OF prospect Jameson Hannah. Roark, alongside ace Sean Manaea, who is set to return from his rehab assignment with Triple-A Las Vegas, seek to secure an AL Wild Card spot for Oakland, currently a half game back from second place.
The Athletics made a strong case for a postseason slot last week, winning four out of five in interleague play against the Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals at RingCentral Coliseum.
For the first time since June 18, 2018 MLB Home Run leader Khris Davis went yard, breaking his homer drought in a big way to help the A's earn a narrow victory,3-2, over the Crew last Tuesday night. Matt Olson delivered the deciding blow, ripping a solo shot to walk it off for the Green and Gold in the bottom of the tenth. Oakland's bats did not spring to life on Wednesday and the A's fell, 4-2, to force a rubber match. The A's emerged victorious on Thursday as Matt Chapman snapped a 3-3 tie with a two-run bomb in the eighth, for a 5-3 win.
With an important series win behind them, the A's sought another against the NL Central second-place St. Louis Cardinals. Following an injury, outfielder Stephen Piscotty, an ex-Cardinal, rejoined the A's roster on Saturday and in turn Franklin Barreto was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas. Although recent acquisition Jake Diekman allowed one earned run in just a third-of-an-inning Mike Fiers' one-run start over the first five-and-two-thirds innings proved enough for an 8-3 Oakland triumph. Trade Deadline talent Tanner Roark made his first start in an Athletics uniform on Sunday as the A's sought three straight victories. Roark's one-run, five K, five inning performance provided plenty of protection for the A's offense, who turned in four runs to card a 4-2 win for three-in-a-row.
The Athletics (64-48, second in the AL West, 0.5 GB AL Wild Card) begin an eight-game road trip this week at Wrigley Field to take on the Chicago Cubs in a three-game set before taking on another Windy City rival, the Chicago White Sox, for three bouts over the weekend.

SCC Red Bucket Brigade sponsored by First Republic Bank
SONOMA, Calif. (Aug. 1, 2019) -- Charitable events combined to raise more than $44,000 for Sonoma County non-profit groups during the 32nd NHRA Sonoma Nationals
at Sonoma Raceway, July 26-28.
The proceeds from the majority of events will benefit Sonoma County youth organizations through the Sonoma Chapter of Speedway Children's Charities (SCC), the charitable arm of the raceway, which has distributed more than $6.4 million to qualified youth groups since 2001.
Fundraising kicked off on Thursday, July 25, at the 13th annual Eric Medlen Nitro Night at Viansa Sonoma, which generated more than $29,000 for Sonoma County children. The evening honors the memory of Medlen, a native of Oakdale in the San Joaquin Valley, who succumbed to injuries sustained from a testing accident in 2007, and all proceeds from the evening benefit SCC in Medlen's name. Since its inception, this event has raised more than $332,900.
For the second year, the event honored someone within the drag racing community who embodies Medlen's spirit and has shown support of charitable efforts. This year, 2012 NHRA Funny Car Champion Jack Beckman received the Eric Medlen Nitro Night Award. Beckman is a longtime supporter of the Sonoma Chapter of SCC and has even emceed Nitro Night for the past several years. In honor of his recognition, Beckman turned over his hosting duties to longtime drag racing announcer Bob Frey, who hosted the first several years of the event.
More than 140 guests attended the event, which was highlighted by NHRA personalities and drivers, including 2018 honoree Ron Capps, Scotty Pollacheck, Brandon Bernstein and J.R. Todd, as well as Medlen's parents, Mimi and John.
Additionally, SCC launched its first SCC Red Bucket Brigade sponsored by First Republic Bank on Friday evening. Volunteers from First Republic Bank and Sonoma Raceway filled the stands to pass red donation buckets through the crowds. The event raised more than $12,400 for
Sonoma County children.
Capping off the weekend's charitable efforts was the Eric Medlen Ice Cream Social on Sunday, July 28. Following the final round of eliminations, fans were invited to enjoy a free scoop of ice cream, compliments of Clover Sonoma, and make a donation to SCC. The social raised $1,044. Speedway Children's Charities also received donations through the "Golden Ticket" charity raffle and the "Cash for Kids" display.
For more information about the Sonoma Chapter of Speedway Children's Charities and future charitable events or to make a donation, visit SonomaRaceway.com/scc or contact Cheri Plattner at (707) 933-3950 or
