After one of the hottest July records in the entire MLB (19-6), the Giants looked like they might make a postseason run, despite their dismal season start. Now, although they remain less than four games back from the second NL Wild Card position, San Francisco has lost seven matchups to start August.

In their seven-game homestand last week the Giants bats fell silent, netting only four runs as San Francisco lost three straight to the visiting Washington Nationals. In last Monday's bout, not a single Giants batter logged a multi-hit appearance, as the Nationals rolled to a 4-0 victory. Tuesday's script filled out a bit differently, as Kevin Pillar and Pablo Sandoval combined for five of the Giants eight hits on the night, including a double from each. However, the Giants still did not reach their full hitting potential, falling 5-3. On Wednesday, it appeared that the Giants might end up scoreless twice in the series as they entered the bottom of the ninth trailing 4-0. However, Brandon Crawford roped an RBI double in the top of the ninth to break the dead streak. Nonetheless, the Giants succumbed to a 4-1 defeat to take their third straight series loss.

Madison Bumgarner entered Thursday's bout versus the visiting Philadelphia Phillies with a losing record (6-7), despite being one of San Francisco's most consistent starters. Fortunately MadBum turned his record back to .500 as he tossed a one-hitter over seven complete innings to lead the Giants to a 5-0 triumph. Cashed-out superstar Bryce Harper led the Phillies to a bounce-back win on Friday as he smoked two home runs on the way to a 9-6 win. With the series even heading into the weekend, the next two games became even more important for San Francisco in an attempt to swing momentum back to the Bay. On Saturday Jeff Samardzija recorded an outstanding eight-inning, two-hit appearance in a 3-1 triumph. This was key for the aforementioned momentum shift, which could produce another wave of brilliance if the Giants can sustain it.

The Giants took the series victory in a 9-6 thriller on Sunday. Recent call-up Scooter Gennett went yard to give the Giants a 6-5 lead in the sixth before San Francisco put up three in the bottom of the eighth to secure the victory.

A bright spot came during Sunday's 1989 World Series Reunion Ceremony at Oracle Park. Fans were met with the surprise announcement that legendary first baseman Will Clark's number 22 will be retired this upcoming season and responded with roars of glee. Clark was the NLCS MVP in the 1989 World Series run by the Giants and was voted to the NL All-Star team for five consecutive years between 1988 and 1992.

The 1989 World Series between the Oakland Athletics and San Francisco Giants will see a reprise as the crossbay rivals face off on Tuesday and Wednesday at Oracle Park before the Giants head to Arizona for a four-game weekend set with the Diamondbacks.  The Giants are now 59-60, in third place in the NL West, and three-and-a-half games back from the second NL Wild Card spot.

Oakland A's Weekly Report

8-12-19 - A's - Rich Yee
 Oakland  left fielder Robbie Grossman receives a warm welcome after scoring a run in the bottom of the eighth inning, on Matt Chapman's home run. Manager Bob Melvin (left) is part of the greeting party. The A's would take home a win with the late inning rally, 5-3, against the visiting Milwaukee Brewers on Aug. 1.  Photo by Rich Yee.

*          *          *
The Athletics returned to early season form last week as they headed to Chicago for three bouts with both the Cubs and White Sox and split the games at 3 apiece. Oakland, now 1.5 games back in the AL Wild Card standings, will look to brush away the misfires from last week off and start a win streak as they take on their crossbay rival, San Francisco Giants, and then the red-hot Houston Astros.  This is not to say that things went wrong for the A's or even that they had a bad week, because in reality it was solid. Rather, more weeks at .500 will simply not contribute to a postseason run.

Last Monday Oakland squared off with the Cubs at Wrigley Field in Chicago. In the matchup, the A's rallied in the eighth with back-to-back jacks from Nick Martini and Marcus Semien to bring the team within one run but were unable to mount a comeback in their 6-5 loss. The A's bounced back on Tuesday as starter Brett Anderson earned his tenth win of the season against his former squad. Anderson, who also had to step up to the plate against the Cubs, smacked two singles in a rare multi-hit appearance for an AL pitcher (and really any pitcher).

Wednesday's ballgame was similarly lopsided, however, as Oakland ate a 10-1 loss as recently acquired starter Homer Bailey allowed seven earned over four and two-thirds innings. This was not a great look for Bailey, who will likely battle for a starting spot as ace Sean Manaea nears completion of his minor league rehab and head-turning prospect A.J. Puk nears his major league debut. A consistent rotation is key for the Athletics in August and September, so if Bailey proves unable to hack it on a weekly basis, manager Bob Melvin will not hesitate to reach out
 for change.

The A's fared better against the White Sox, as Mike Fiers started strong with seven scoreless innings on Friday, on the way to his fifth straight victory. Oakland's offense backed his performance up with three bombs in a 7-0 rout. On Saturday, despite loading the bases in the top of the ninth inning and facing a 3-2 deficit, the Athletics fell flat as Khris Davis struck out to end the game and force a rubber match on Sunday. A two-run bomb from Matt Olson was all the A's needed to take the series, despite sixteen A's strikeouts. Chris Bassitt turned in a strong outing to start, delivering seven shutout innings and allowing just four hits.  The Oakland Athletics are now 67-51, second in the AL West, and 1.5 games back from second place in the
AL Wild Card race.

The vast majority of student-athletes dreaming of athletic stardom won't make it to the pros. Yet, the discipline and skills they've developed while balancing a sport and academics make them ideally s uited for satisfying careers elsewhere. In 20 Secrets to Success for NCAA Student-Athletes Who Won't Go Pro, the authors draw on personal experience, interviews, expert opinion, and industry data to provide a game plan for student-athletes through key transitions at each stage of their careers, from high school through college and beyond. Modeled on Stephen Covey's The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, this book provides a much-needed strategy for achieving career success. Readable and concise, it will be a valuable tool for students, parents, and sports administrators. To order, click here.
