San Francisco 49ers Dwight Clark Day, 8/7
The San Francisco 49ers hosted Dwight Clark Day on August 7, during the team's open training camp to celebrate the man responsible for "The Catch." As part of the Day, the 49ers spent time with families touched by ALS. More than 70 folks from the ALS Association Golden West Chapter and Augie's Quest attended to meet 49ers alumni as well as players, post-practice. The ALS Association Golden West Chapter is dedicated to the fight against ALS in many ways, including funding global research efforts, supporting scientific and clinical collaboration, and connecting people with ALS to clinical trials. Augie's Quest was co-founded in 2005 by Augie Nieto, a successful fitness industry mogul behind Lifecycle and Life Fitness, who was diagnosed with ALS in 2005. The organization raises funds and awareness urgently needed to advance cutting-edge research, fast-track effective treatments, and ultimately, find a cure for this devastating disease.

San Francisco Giants Weekly Report
Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto (10) steals second base as San Francisco Giants second baseman Donovan Solano (7) waits for a throw during the sixth inning at Oracle Park.
The Phillies surged ahead in the final innings for a 9-6 decision on Grateful Dead Tribute Night on Aug. 9.
* * *
After a subpar start to August, in which the Giants lost six of their first seven games, San Francisco returned to postseason potential last week with four wins and a series victory.
While they still remain three games back from the second NL Wild Card spot and in sole possession of second place in the NL West, the Giants hopes for a playoff berth continue to grow as the likes of Mike Yastrzemski and Kevin Pillar shine.
Madison Bumgarner led San Francisco to a tight 3-2 victory over the Oakland Athletics in the first 2019 Bay Bridge Series game at Oracle Park last Tuesday. Bumgarner dealt nine strikeouts over seven scoreless innings, in which he allowed just two hits. Although Will Smith was shaky in his relief appearance in the ninth, allowing a run and loading the bags, he struck out Chad Pinder to record the final out and secure the triumph. The A's Homer Bailey proved too dominant for San Francisco batters on Wednesday night as he delivered seven shutout frames of his own, with seven strikeouts, on the way to a 9-5 win to even up the crossbay rivalry. The Bay Bridge Series will conclude its final installment this coming weekend at the RingCentral Coliseum in Oakland.
The Giants sought a win at Chase Field against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday to (ideally) jumpstart a surge up the Wild Card standings. Not only did Dereck Rodriguez deal seven shutout innings and allow just three hits, but San Francisco's offense exploded for seven runs to which the Diamondbacks did not respond, winning 7-0. In Friday's game the Giants worked into the eleventh inning after their 9-7 lead in the tenth inning was tied. The Giants emerged victorious, 10-9, as rookie Mike Yastrzemski roped his last of three home runs in the ballgame. These three jacks were just half of the San Francisco home run total on the evening, as Kevin Pillar juiced two bombs and Brandon Belt had one as well.
Twenty-two-year-old RHP Logan Webb made his MLB and Giants debut at Chase Field on Saturday, starting on the bump and tossing seven strikeouts over five complete frames, allowing just one run. This earned him his first Major League victory, as San Francisco sprung to life at the dish for eleven runs in an 11-6 triumph.
Although the Giants fell 6-1 on Sunday, they are very much within sight of the NL Wild Card as they take on the current NL Wild Card second-place Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field this Tuesday for a three-game midweek series. San Francisco, now 63-62 on the season, will return to the Bay for the conclusion of the aforementioned 2019 Bay Bridge Series this weekend.

As the Athletics' week opened last Tuesday with a two-game set with the San Francisco Giants, more than the Bay Area dominance was on the line. Oakland was inching closer to a postseason berth and today this remains the case. Currently, the Oakland Athletics are just half-a-game back from the second AL Wild Card position, capping off an exciting and challenging winning week with a series victory over the first-place Houston Astros.
In San Francisco the A's squared off against future Hall-of-Famer Madison Bumgarner to start the week. Despite digging into a two-run deficit and creating a 3-2 ballgame with bases loaded in the top of the ninth, the Athletics were unable to mount a comeback and fell in Game One. Looking to even the first installment of the 2019 Bay Bridge Series on Wednesday, Oakland received hefty support from Homer Bailey in his sixth start since his acquisition in July. Bailey allowed just two hits over seven scoreless frames in which he dealt seven strikeouts. While the game should have been a cakewalk, considering Oakland's 7-0 lead (which included two homers from Matt Chapman), A's relievers fell apart as Joakim Soria and Yusmeiro Petit combined for five earned in the top half of the eighth inning. Fortunately 2019 All- Star Liam Hendriks closed out a 9-5 victory with just a single hit over four outs.
Relief decay is nothing new to the Athletics, who are tied for the fifth-most blown saves in the MLB with 22. With a genuine shot at the postseason, relief appearances grow more important with each game. In turn, it was essential that A's relievers shape up against the AL West-leading Houston Astros in a four-game set to prove their ability to defeat high-caliber competitors.
In the first matchup on Thursday strong pitching was not a highlight as both teams combined for ten home runs in a thirteen-run effort. Matt Chapman and Matt Olson both went yard twice to assist in a 7-6 Oakland victory. With Justin Verlander and Tanner Roark each starting in Friday's matchup, the ball game was sure to produce far fewer runs than the previous outing. 'Stros ace Verlander fired up for eleven strikeouts over seven frames, however, the two solo homers he allowed to Mark Canha and Marcus Semien were enough to send the game to extras after a strong start from Roark as well. Four Oakland relievers shut down the Astros in game-breaking situations to send the game to the thirteenth inning, when Robbie Grossman knocked a walk-off single for a 3-2 triumph.
This was an important bounce-back for the A's relief staff, especially for Blake Treinen, who has struggled with closing consistency all season. Treinen performed well in relief in Saturday's series-clinching 8-4 victory as well, dealing a scoreless inning before Yusmeiro Petit turned in a key shutdown inning to close.
Despite a 4-1 loss on Sunday, which eliminated a series sweep and ended a four-game winning streak, the relief corp came together against Houston as a whole. A's fans can only hope that this is the beginning of future consistency on the mound late in ballgames, particularly considering the daunting week ahead. Another first-place squad, the New York Yankees, heads into Oakland this week and A's relievers will need to come alive again for the three-game set before the final installment of the Bay Bridge Series at the RingCentral Coliseum on Saturday and Sunday.
The Oakland Athletics are now 71-53, in second place in the AL West, and one-and-a-half games back from the second AL Wild Card position.

Sports Prep Star -- Angel More
Menlo School-Atherton - Distance Swimming - Senior
What did you do this weekend? Angel More swam 28 miles around the Manhattan Island in New York City. More is a world record-holding marathon swimmer who has swum the likes of Lake Tahoe and the Catalina Channel. Perhaps even more impressive than those athletic feats, her swim around Manhattan will be an event to raise awareness for a two-year charity campaign she's launched in conjunction with Children International. The campaign is called "Angel's Hope" and carries a goal of raising $1 million to create as many as 5,000 scholarships for teens around the world. In the first two weeks of the campaign, More has already raised $15,000. Visit
