After an exhilarating series triumph over the rival Los Angeles Dodgers in manager Bruce Bochy's final set at Dodger Stadium, the Giants entered last week with a sense of positivity the club hadn't felt since their hot month of July.
The club was entering a seven-game home stand, taking on two teams with 'also' losing records. Though a late surge for the NL Wild Card seemed improbable, every win at home is special for Bruce Bochy's final weeks of tenure at Oracle Park. The Pirates (62-81) and the Marlins (51-96) series last week seemed like good opportunities for some cherished Bruce Bochy wins --
if only the offense could put up some runs.
On Monday night, after leading 4-2 heading into the top of the ninth inning, Giants reliever Ty Rogers surrendered a run to tighten the game. The ninth inning fell further apart, first for Fernando Abad, as he allowed the Pirates' decisive fourth and fifth runs and a Pittsburgh win,
6-4. A similar situation arose the next day, as San Francisco held a 5-0 lead into the eighth inning. The Pirates responded with a four-run top half again, as Sam Coonrod and Wandy Peralta each allowed a pair. Ultimately, the Giants scraped by with a 5-4 triumph as Shaun Anderson dealt two Ks over the final four outs. Anderson, who started in 16 games this season, logging a 3-5 record before fumbling into a relief role, turned in two quality final innings last week, each of which earned him a save. Anderson might be a critical piece San Francisco needs to right the ship at the end of the season.
San Francisco, shut out in three separate games two weeks ago, was beginning to turn things around offensively with back-to-back five-run outings in their first two Pittsburgh matchups. However, they fell cold for the last two games of the series, going 1-for-7 and 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position, falling 6-3 and 4-2 respectively.
The weekend series against the scoring-deficient Miami produced a total of just five runs for the Giants but they emerged with the series triumph. Starter Tyler Beede proved a challenge as he continued his upward trend on Friday night, allowing just three hits and dealing five Ks over
six-and-a-third scoreless frames on the way to a 1-0 victory. Beede, 3-9 entering his last two starts, has thrown 11.1 scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts since, earning back-to-back wins.
If Beede can remain consistent, he will be an important piece of the starting rotation moving
into the offseason.
On Saturday the Marlins took advantage of the Giants inability to score with runners in scoring position (RISP) yet again, as San Francisco missed opportunity after opportunity, ultimately going 1-for-9 with RISP. Fortunately in Sunday's rubber match and with the score tied at 1-1, Mike Yastrzemski (on third base at the time) took manners into his own hands. When a wild pitch escaped the catcher, Yaz had just enough time to dart home and narrowly score San Francisco's go-ahead run, earning the Giants a series win.
The San Francisco Giants are 72-78 and 9.5 games back from the second NL Wild Card position. They now head to Fenway Park for a three-game set with the Red Sox before tripping to
Atlanta for three with Braves over the weekend.

It didn't look like last week would turn out well for the Oakland Athletics as they headed to Houston to take on the MLB-best Astros, who were fresh off of a 21-1 demolishing of the Seattle Mariners one night prior. Granted, Seattle is the worst team in the AL West and one of the worst in the bigs, while Oakland continues to fight for a Wild Card spot.
In what would be a historically brutal night for Oakland baseball, A's starter Mike Fiers surrendered eleven runs off of five home runs before recording an out in the bottom of the second inning. Houston continued the assault and set an MLB record with six homers in the first two innings, on their way to a 15-0 thump at home. Although the Astros were already 10-5 against the A's this season heading into their four-game set, nobody could have predicted what would come the following night.
2018 MLB home run leader Khris Davis, sidelined with a hip injury for a portion of this season, was struggling to find his groove after returning from the IL. On Tuesday night Davis made history by becoming the seventh A's batter this season with more 20-plus home runs. His home run, however, was only a small piece of what made this night unprecedented. The Athletics plated 21 runs on 25 hits, in which every A's starter was responsible for a run and Matt Olson and Sean Murphy each logged a two-homer, four-RBI performance at the dish. This matchup ended in a football score, as Oakland bounced back in a truly unpredictable fashion for a 21-7 victory. Now it was the Athletics with momentum and they turned their own 21-run performance into a long win streak with two more wins to take the Series. In the final game on Thursday the A's held a 3-2 lead and Houston had runners on the corners in the bottom of the ninth when Liam Hendriks shut the door with a looking strikeout to earn the series win. With the strikeout Hendriks became the all-time MLB strikeout leader among Australian-born pitchers.
The series win was enormous for Oakland, not only strengthening their position in the Wild Card race, but because the Astros are the last winning team the A's face all season.
In the following three-game series with the Rangers the A's made their offensive presence known, posting seven runs over the first four innings. However, Texas took seven runs of their own from A's starter Chris Bassitt, who only made it three innings deep before his removal. In the end, Oakland had more firepower, including a two-run jack from Marcus Semien in the ninth amidst a four-run inning which ended with a 14-9 triumph. This game was also notable for Khris Davis, who knocked two homers, one of which put the A's on top.
The A's starting rotation hit a big bump on Saturday. Starting pitcher Mike Fiers left the game with two outs in the bottom of the second inning, citing a brief numbness in his throwing hand. Manager Bob Melvin says Fiers has experienced nerve irritation before and hopes to have him throw in the bullpen on Monday.
Oakland rolled onto an 8-6 victory on Saturday and entered Sunday with the opportunity to set a new single-season franchise record for home runs; the current record was 243 bombs by the 1996 Athletics. Marcus Semien got the tying homer out of the way early, smoking a two-run shot which made him the third Athletics hitter to reach 30 jacks this season. Matt Olson had 34 entering the game, and Matt Chapman matched him with his 34th in the top of the ninth inning to earn the A's their most home runs in a single season. This capped a 6-1 victory for Oakland, a series sweep, another exceptional start from Sean Manaea, a six-game winning streak, their 90th win of the season, and a heck of a bounce-back after Monday's embarrassing loss.
The Oakland Athletics are now 90-60 and in sole possession of the first AL Wild Card position, ahead of Tampa Bay by one-and-a-half games and ahead of ahead of Cleveland by three. The A's will take on the Kansas City Royals and the Texas Rangers in respective three-game sets for their final home stand of the 2019 regular season this week at RingCentral Coliseum.
