In a game of quarters the Oakland Raiders fell to the Kansas City Chiefs at home on Sunday, Sept. 15. All the scoring was in the first half with Oakland shutting out Kansas City in the first quarter, 10-0, and the Chiefs returned the favor by scoring 28 points in the second quarter. Final score: Chiefs 28, Raiders 10. Oakland will not play another home game until Nov. 3, as they play four road games paired with a bye week and a 'home' game in London.  To view a photo album, visit our Facebook Page and be sure to LIKE us or visit www.ultimatesportsguide.net.

Raiders in the Community -- Honor for Linda Sanchez

9-23-19 - Raiders
The Raiders selected Linda Sanchez, co-founder of Casa Sin Fronteras, as the recipient of the NFL Hispanic Heritage Leadership Award. The NFL and the Hispanic Heritage Foundation (HHF) have partnered for the ninth annual NFL Hispanic Heritage Leadership Awards during the 2019 celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. The awards recognize the contributions of Hispanic leaders in each NFL market.

The Raiders honored Sanchez during a pregame ceremony on Sunday, Sept. 15, before the Silver and Black played the Kansas City Chiefs at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.

Sanchez, 28, is from Oaxaca, Mexico and started her activism while organizing for the Federal Dream Act when she was a high school student. While attending UC Berkeley she co-founded Casa Sin Fronteras (formally known as Dream House), was the coordinator of Entre Familia, a scholarship platform for undocumented youth pre-CA Dream Act, and most recently founded Fuerza Indígena, a social enterprise to politically and economically uplift Fruitvale's indigenous Mam population. She is deeply committed to uplifting migrant youth voices and working in collaboration with them to find their voice and power.

Each award recipient selects an organization of their choice that serves the local Hispanic community to receive a $2,000 donation. Sanchez has chosen the UC Berkeley Chicano Latino Alumni Association- Undocumented Student program to receive this donation.

Despite accepting elimination from the 2019 postseason, it was a special week for the Giants. Although San Francisco's record on their final road trip of 2019 (3-3) reflects a different story, both Mike Yastrzemski and Bruce Bochy shared honorable moments with respective crowds
in Boston and Atlanta.

Rookie Yastrzemski, whose Hall-of-Fame grandfather Carl was an 18-time MLB All-Star in his 23-season tenure with the Boston Red Sox from 1961-1983, made his MLB debut at Fenway Park on Monday. "Yaz," as the duo are each referenced, had support from family, friends and fans throughout the stadium as they connected for the night's first pitch ceremony. The widespread support rejoiced in a standing ovation in the fourth inning as a Yaz homered at Fenway for the first time in over 36 seasons, when Mike sent a solo shot to the center field bleachers on the way to a 7-6 Giants victory in 15 innings.

San Francisco nabbed two of three versus the Red Sox and most notable was last Wednesday's 11-3 win. An eight-run victory over the 2018 World Series champion Red Sox felt good for San Francisco, amidst a sub-.500 season. But it felt even better for manager Bruce Bochy, who earned his 2,000th managerial victory with Wednesday's triumph.

Bochy has felt the love all season in each of his final appearances at stadiums across the country, in anticipation of his retirement after the season's end, and last week's road contenders delivered celebrations in style. As is now custom, the Braves and Red Sox played a video montage in honor of Bruce Bochy's career achievements, before according the legendary manager
a roaring ovation.

In Bochy's final road game on Sunday, his Giants earned a 4-1 victory in Atlanta, knocking off the October-bound Braves via a two-hit, seven strikeout performance on the mound from 22-year-old rookie Logan Webb. Veteran Evan Longoria was also instrumental in the victory, as he tabbed a two-hit, two-RBI performance at the dish.

This victory sends San Francisco back home for their final homestand of the 2019 season and the last of Bruce Bochy's San Francisco career. The Giants will take on the Colorado Rockies before fittingly ending with a weekend rivalry series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Thank you, Boch.

The Oakland Athletics performed like the Wildest Card last week. Oakland's offense is top notch; they rank sixth in the Majors in average runs scored per game (5.35) and have logged five double-digit outings in September. They proved reliable again last week, scoring 31 runs in a 4-2 week in which they only allowed four total runs in their four wins.

On the bump, however, Oakland has struggled to find their rhythm. Monday's bout with the Kansas City Royals was a case in point. After starting pitcher Tanner Roark exited the game after 110 pitches in just four and two-thirds innings, recently shaky reliever Jake Diekman turned two runners left aboard into two more earned runs for Roark, who allowed four in total. This sent a 4-4 tie into the eighth inning, in which Oakland took a 5-4 lead behind an RBI single from Khris Davis. Liam Hendriks, an All-Star pitcher this season, tripped up late in the ninth, however, surrendering a solo homer and a go-ahead RBI double from which the A's were unable to recover. Final score: Royals 6, A's 5.

Oakland's slip-ups on the mound showed up on Sunday as well. At the helm again was Tanner Roark, who allowed a career-high four homers amidst a five-run, three-inning outing which put the Athletics at a disadvantage in their quest for a sweep in their final regular season home series of 2019. Final score: Rangers 8, A's 3.

Fortunately for the Athletics, if a singular kink in the pitching rotation emerges, they have capable reinforcements. RHP Frankie Montas, Oakland's starting ERA leader this season until his 80-game suspension for PED use in June, is slated to return to the Green & Gold this Tuesday against the Anaheim Angels.

Another contributing positivity is that Oakland's upcoming series in Anaheim is their second-to-last before they finish their 2019 regular season against the AL-West worst Seattle Mariners. Both opposing squads have losing records, hopefully with a few more losses soon to be tacked on by the hands  of the Bashin' A's.

The Athletics keep bashing due largely to the consistent help of Marcus Semien, who is making a strong case in the AL MVP race now that Mike Trout's season ended prematurely via injury. This week Semien surpassed A's Hall-of-Famer Rickey Henderson for the most home runs (now 30, previous record 28) out of the leadoff position in a single season. Semien is a fundamental piece for this squad on both sides of the ball, responsible for just twelve errors on the season, down eight from last season for the second-lowest single season total in his career,
significantly down from 35 in 2014.

The Oakland Athletics (94-62) are in first place in the AL Wild Card standings, two games ahead of the Tampa Bay Rays and Cleveland Indians.

ATLANTA, Ga. --  The San Jose Earthquakes fell to Atlanta United FC, 3-1, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 21.

San Jose played two-thirds of the match with 10 men after midfielder Cristian Espinoza picked up his second yellow card in the 34th minute. Despite the man disadvantage, San Jose held Atlanta without a second goal until the 90th minute. United added a third goal two minutes later as the Quakes pushed for an equalizer.

The Quakes' defense held Atlanta forward Josef Martinez without a single shot in his 79 minutes, bringing an end to the Venezuelan's MLS-record 15 match scoring streak.

The Earthquakes now take on the Philadelphia Union in their penultimate home match of the season on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 7:45 p.m. PT (NBC Sports California, KNBR 1050, 1370 KZSF).

The vast majority of student-athletes dreaming of athletic stardom won't make it to the pros. Yet, the discipline and skills they've developed while balancing a sport and academics make them ideally s uited for satisfying careers elsewhere. In 20 Secrets to Success for NCAA Student-Athletes Who Won't Go Pro, the authors draw on personal experience, interviews, expert opinion, and industry data to provide a game plan for student-athletes through key transitions at each stage of their careers, from high school through college and beyond. Modeled on Stephen Covey's The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, this book provides a much-needed strategy for achieving career success. Readable and concise, it will be a valuable tool for students, parents, and sports administrators. To order, click here.
