San Francisco Giants Update --  Heading into Spring Training, the Giants are still looking to finalize their pitching rotation. Bumgarner, Cueto, Samardzija, and Matt Moore head the pitching staff, but the final spot is still up for grabs, with Matt Cain looking to secure the position. Cain is a three-time All-Star who has spent his whole career in San Francisco, but his past three seasons have been riddled with injuries. Cain suffered elbow injuries in 2014, followed by a flexor-tendon strain at the start of the 2015 season. After looking to rebound in 2016, Cain was set back by a strained hamstring in May. The 2017 season may be Cain's last chance to find his old form, and it won't come without competition. Up and coming lefty Ty Blach will fight Cain for the final spot in the rotation, but as of now it is Cain's spot to lose. If Cain is unable to make the rotation, he will be relegated to the bullpen, where he finished last season.  -- Addison Weil

Oakland A's pitcher Sonny Gray pulled out a 2-1 victory over the   Chicago White Sox on April 6, 2016 for their first win of the season. Photo by Michael Zagaris.

Oakland Athletics Update:   In the A's organization, there is probably nobody more excited for Spring Training than Sonny Gray. Coming off his most disappointing season, the ace of the Athletics is hoping for a redemptive year in 2017. Gray shined in 2014 and 2015, his first two full seasons, earning 14 wins each year while posting a 3.08 and 2.73 ERA, respectively. However, 2016 was a different story, as Gray's production fell and he was forced to go on the DL in both May and August. Now back at full health, the team has high expectations for their number one pitcher, who will report to Arizona with the rest of the pitchers and catchers on February 14 th . Before the MLB regular season gets underway, Gray will represent the United States in the World Baseball Classic. He joins eight other players from the Athletics organization who will represent a total of six countries.

The Oakland Museum of California (OMCA) presented a new display embodying the spirit of Oakland Strong. Three pairs of sneakers worn by Golden State Warriors All Star point guard Stephen Curry -- on loan from an anonymous collector -- are on view in OMCA's Great Hall through April 2. Two of the three custom, one-of-a-kind shoes, pay respect to the victims of the Ghost Ship warehouse fire in December of 2016, raising a total of $45,201 for the Oakland Fire Relief fund established through YouCaring.com by the Oakland Athletics. The shoes were purchased through an auction on eBay.

Next Saturday, the Bears remain on home turf as the British Columbia Thunderbirds make their annual trip across the border for a 2 p.m. kickoff on February 18 in the opening match of the "World Cup" series, a two-contest, home-and-away battle decided by aggregate points. Dating back to 1921, when the Vancouver World Newspaper presented a trophy to the winners, the 2016 series got off to a dramatic start last spring on Witter Rugby Field, where Cal and UBC fought through four lead changes before a late penalty kick by the T-Birds cemented their 20-15 decision. The conclusion to the 2017 series takes place Sunday, March 5, in Vancouver, Canada, at Thunderbird Stadium (kickoff TBA).

2-13-17 - Daniel Geary

Aerial Autograph: Catching a
Kaepernick Bomb

--Daniel Geary
In 2011 the NFL off-season was a roller coaster of excitement. The Miami Dolphins and the San Francisco 49ers were in a vicious battle to land Jim Harbaugh as their coach, and it looked like the Niners weren't going to get him. The Dolphins were pushing hard and were offering Jim more money than the 49ers were. After weeks of speculation he finally decided San Francisco was the place for him, and every 49ers fan rejoiced.

The next step in the turnaround was the draft. The Niners lacked a stud pass rusher, a quarterback for the future and a young and talented corner. The draft came and all three of those needs were addressed in the first three rounds. Aldon Smith was drafted seventh overall (pass rush), Colin Kaepernick was selected 36th overall (QB) and Chris Culliver was selected with the 80th pick (big, fast corner).

The day was Aug. 14, 2011, and the 49ers were having their first fan fest in 20 years.

I was pumped that day. It was Harbaugh's first season as an NFL head coach, and he was at the helm of my favorite team. There were new playmakers to go along with the talent already on the team. Things were going to be different. The 49ers were going to get back to their winning ways, and I was going to be able to watch a live practice in person.

After the practice some goodies were tossed to the crowd. I caught a mini-football and was as happy as a clam. Then we were let onto the field to get autographs from the players. There were huge lines for Frank Gore, Patrick Willis and Vernon Davis, and it seemed like a long shot to get one of their autographs. But Smith had very few people in his line, so I got him to sign my mini-football quickly and shook his hand. I was very excited. I also saw that Culliver wasn't swamped and got him to sign my football as well.

As I looked around I saw Kaepernick with a sizable crowd around him, and I tried to get closer. That was not going to happen. I had two of the first three draft picks' autographs and I wanted the third to complete my mini-football. I waved to Kap and called his name. I held up my mini-football and he signaled me to toss it to him. I became nervous as all hell, but I managed a perfect spiral that he easily caught. He signed the football, cocked his arm and threw a high pass to me. It had to clear the crowd, which was still getting bigger. I jumped to catch it and grasped it with both hands. I was so happy. I had caught a pass from an NFL quarterback. At the time he was a rookie, but I could sense big things to come from him -- and it all started with my catching his pass.
