2018 NFL Draft -- San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders
I
n the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders both selected offensive tackles as their first picks. The 49ers drafted tackle Mike McGlinchey (68) of Notre Dame as the ninth pick overall, and the Raiders drafted tackle Kolton Miller (77) of UCLA as the 15th pick overall, bolstering the pass protections of both offenses for veteran quarterbacks Jimmy Garoppolo of the Niners and Derek Carr of the Silver & Black.

2018 NFL Draft -- Stanford Cardinal Selections
The Farm was well represented in the 2018 NFL Draft, with three Stanford graduates being selected in the third and fourth rounds. Defensive tackle Harrison Phillips (66) was selected by the Buffalo Bills in the third round as the 96th pick overall. Safety Justin Reid (8), whose older brother Eric is a safety for the San Francisco 49ers, was selected by the Houston Texans in the third round as the 68th pick overall. And tight end Dalton Schultz (9) was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the fourth round as the 137th pick overall, perhaps as the heir to the Cowboys' 15-year throne of tight end Jason Witten, the future Hall of Famer who is expected to announce his retirement early this week.

Oakland Raiders
The Oakland Raiders first round draft pick, Kolton Miller, was introduced to the media on Friday, April 27, at their Alameda headquarters. Miller was chosen 15th overall in the 2018 NFL Draft. Born in Redwood City, Miller grew up in Roseville and was part of UCLA's offensive line. At 6-8 and 310 lbs, Miller is expected to make a contribution to the team's offensive line by protecting quarterback Derek Carr and creating running space for the running backs

San Francisco Giants
It turns out San Francisco Giants fan-favorite Pablo Sandoval can do more than hit crucial home runs in a World Series game (three against Detroit in game one in 2012). On Saturday afternoon, at the end of a disheartening 15-6 loss to Los Angeles Dodgers, Sandoval was substituted in as a pitcher at the top of the ninth inning and retired the Dodgers in order, something no other Giants pitcher had been able to do during the long day. Said Giants manager Bruce Bochy, "He looked like a pitcher. That's what was impressive: his delivery, his tempo." Bochy did not rule out using Pablo on the mound again. Photo by Kenny Karst.
|
With two out in the bottom of the fifth inning San Francisco Giants Andrew McCutchen doubled to left fielder Matt Adams of the Nationals and was brought home by Buster Posey, who followed with a single to extend the Giants lead to 2-0. Photo by Ed Jay.
|
On Metallica Night, Giants outfielder Mac Williamson hit a sixth inning two-run homer to deep right-center field, seldom reached by right-handed hitters. The ball traveled a projected 464 feet and ranks second among Giants batters, in terms of distance, to Brandon Belt's 475-foot drive on May 22, 2015, the year Statcast began. The two runs Williamson drove in turned out to be winning margin as the Giants won, 4-2. U
nfortunately Williamson sustained a concussion the following night diving for a fly ball near the Giants' bull pen and has been placed on the seven day disabled list.

LPGA MEDIHEAL Championship
Lydia Ko (New Zealand) won the LPGA MEDIHEAL Championship with an eagle on the par 5 extra hole. Her approach shot landed two-and-one-half-feet from the hole. It was an emotional win for Lydia and she was in tears as family and friends surrounded her. Ko has won three of the four LPGA tournaments she has played at the Lake Merced Golf Club and just turned 21. This was her 15th LPGA win. Caption and photo by Ed Jay.

Minjee Lee shot a 4-under 68 to force a playoff hole against Lydia Ko. Lee won the 2012 U.S. Girls' Junior at Lake Merced Golf Club. She is currently ranked 15th in the world, with career earnings exceeding three million. Caption and photo by Ed Jay.

Sonoma Raceway -- Top the Cop Program
High school students drag raced against Bay Area law enforcement officers in the popular Top the Cops program when it returned as part of
Sonoma Raceway's weekly Wednesday Night Drags on Wednesday, April 25. The Top the Cops program, which enters its 24th season year, offers an alternative to illegal street racing and gives teens the chance to race against law
enforcement officers, who compete in full uniform in their official vehicles on the quarter-mile drag strip. The program also provides a unique environment for the officers to talk with teens about safe driving and the rules of the road.

Sports Prep Star -- Josh Giffins
California High School-San Ramon -- Junior -- Baseball
|
Giffins, a right-handed power pitcher, threw a perfect game against San Ramon Valley of Danville on Friday, April 27, during a 4-0 Grizzlies' win over their rival and host Wolves. Giffins struck out five, including the game's last out, and induced seven ground balls and nine fly balls (five to the outfield). The 6-foot-3, 240-pound junior threw 86 pitches, 57 for strikes, and went to a three-ball count four times. Junior Connor Lawrence, who supplied the game-winning RBI with a first-inning single, caught Giffins. (The two have been teammates since Little League.) Giffins improved to 6-0 in seven starts through April 27 and lowered his East Bay Athletic League-leading earned-run average to 0.76 (.784 WHIP) while boosting his season total to 32 strikeouts in 37 innings. (Giffins has allowed only 14 hits and four earned runs.) Giffins has orally committed to the University of Utah. Text and photo by Ross McKeon. |

Sabermetrics, Launch Angle and Statcast
|
Sabermetrics: The first-hand analysis of baseball, especially baseball statistics that measure in-game activity.
Launch Angle: When Barry Bonds hit 73 home runs in 2001, everybody was talking about the "bat speed" in his swing. Adios to "bat speed!" Today, the "launch angle" has become an obsession with hitters.
According to the experts, along with the ball speed, the launch angle is a primary component to determining the height and distance of a home run. It is said that every golfer should be fitted to achieve the optimal balance of launch angle and spin based on their club speed and ball speed. There is a reason when a team goes on a road trip you will see dozens of suitcases and also golf bags.
Statcast: Major League Baseball's Statcast is a
high-speed, high-accuracy, automated tool that was developed to analyze player movements and athletic abilities. The Statcast was introduced to all 30 MLB stadiums in 2015. There is a leader-board for Statcast: Giancarlo Stanton (117.9 mph), Mike Trout (116.9 mph) and so on. It shows how fast the ball leaves the bat when hitting a home run.
Today we have self-driving cars which can drive and park by themselves. We do not have to visit the bank and see the face of a bank teller. We go to a machine, punch a number and we get money. In China, the Shanghai branch of the China Construction Bank (CCB) opened a branch run entirely by robots, the first person-less bank branch where humanoids manage everything. Texting has replaced writing, as kids barely can write anymore. If you lose your cellphone, you probably will feel lost, depressed and abandoned, and may require therapy. People are working with their laptops at Starbucks while the local libraries are empty and continue to close.
Many fans at a baseball game are taking pictures, filming the action or just capturing themselves. At the ballpark or anywhere else, you can track a ballgame, pitch-by-pitch and you will know if it is a slider, curve, split or 96 mph fastball. More people are getting hurt by foul balls. You need more than two eyes to look at your smartphone screen and at the game on the field at the same time. And only God knows where we will be in the next few years. Back in 1989, actor Michael J. Fox in the movie "Back To The Future II" had a line that read, "the Cubs win the World Series!" and they did just that.
We have come a long way since the days when the U.S. Army timed the fastest pitch ever thrown by a pitcher in 1958. Bob Feller at 98 miles-per-hour was recorded on the old U.S. Army chronograph. That was a big deal and it was even shown at your local movie theater before the main feature and narrated by the legendary Lowell Thomas of Movietone Newsreel fame on the glorious Black and White.
Today Elon Musk wants to go to the moon and Richard Branson wants to colonize Mars.
