San Francisco Giants
Brandon Belt's return to the Giants starting lineup, after recovering from an emergency appendectomy, could not have proven more timely. His team-leading home run (12) drove in two runs and added a cushion of insurance in San Francisco's 4-1 victory over Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon. Belt is pictured above at AT&T Park on

Looking to swing the disc across the field, Cody Kirkland takes aim at Vincenzo Vitiello (49) as the San Francisco Flamethrowers held on for the 21-17 win over their Bay Area rival, the San Jose Spiders, on Saturday night at Laney College in Oakland.

The FlameThrowers'
Jacob Greenberg lays out to make a catch for the score in the second quarter as San Francisco would take the season series, 3 games to 1. With the loss, the Spiders slipped to third place in the standings. The Spiders next game is at home against the first place Los Angeles Aviators on Saturday, June 23 at 7 p.m.

Rock Tahoe Half Marathon
The fourth annual Rock Tahoe Half Marathon (13.1 miles) returned to Stateline, Nevada on Saturday, June 16, 2018. With one of the most breathtaking half marathon courses in the country, over 1,600 Rock Tahoe participants enjoyed the spectacular scenery of many of Tahoe's east and south shore treasures including Glenbrook, Logan Shoals, Cave Rock, Round Hill Pines, Nevada Beach, and Rabe Meadow as they wound down over 1,000 feet from Spooner Summit to the finish line at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Lake Tahoe.

This year's field featured runners from 30 states and six countries. Approximately 80% of the field were non-locals, traveling an average distance of over 150 miles to participate. 60% of the participants were between the ages of 30-49 years old and 71% were women.

The youngest competitor was an 11-year-old from Antelope, CA and the youngest at heart was soon-to-be 78-year-old local Ute Luyties from Stateline, NV, who returned for her fourth time to Rock Tahoe.

Fishing the rigs -- think Horizon Explorer

Ugly ties, boring brunches, sweaters which Ray Ratto would return...no, I'll go with a fishing trip to Venice. Not the Pacific Ocean in SoCal or the canals in Italy but the sportsman's paradise of Venice, Louisiana.

Captain Hunter netting bait fish
|
|
"
The Gateway to the Gulf" is at the southern tip of the state a 90-minute drive from New Orleans. I've been lucky enough to have experienced world class fishing for giant yellowfin tuna, blue marlin, swordfish and many other fighting finny creatures the past several years.
Countless oil rigs span the horizon offering deep water structure and hold trophy fish year- round. These rigs provide a biosphere for migratory monsters which take refuge during their swims across the ocean.

This past weekend a group of my Memphis Grizzlies buddies hooked into yellowfin tuna, red snapper, shark, bonito and redfish with a day of inshore fishing. Our captain, the perfectly named Hunter Caballero of Paradise Outfitters, is one of the best in the business. His 42-foot Renaissance Prowler is a pure fishing machine which flies through the water.
If you want to make plans for fishing on Father's Day 2019, check out the opportunities with Paradise Outfitters at venicefishing.com

San Jose Earthquakes

Earthquakes acquire Vitesse and Georgia National Team captain Guram Kashia
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- The San Jose Earthquakes announced that the club has acquired center back Guram Kashia using Targeted Allocation Money (TAM). Kashia has served as captain for both Dutch Eredivisie side Vitesse Arnhem and the Georgia National Team. He will be eligible to play for San Jose after the Secondary Transfer Window opens on July 10, pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P-1 Visa. "To reinforce select positions during the upcoming transfer windows, we began by identifying someone that fit the criteria we were looking for in a high-quality central defender and this was Guram," said Earthquakes general manager Jesse Fioranelli. "In addition to his extensive experience, he is a leader both on and off the field and we're confident he will be an important addition to our squad." Kashia, 30, has competed for Vitesse since August of 2010. He has made 293 total appearances for the Dutch side across all competitions, tallying 25 goals and 18 assists. Kashia has made at least 26 appearances in the Eredivisie every season since his acquisition. Reprinted courtesy San Jose Earthquakes |

Sonoma Raceway -- Toyota/Save Mart 350 Monster Energy NASCAR
Cup Series
SONOMA, Calif. -- Sonoma Raceway has teamed up with Friedman's Home Improvement to host an unforgettable pre-race show before the Toyota/Save Mart 350 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series on Sunday, June 24.
Race-day entertainment kicks off at 10 a.m., so fans are strongly encouraged to arrive early to enjoy all the action-packed fun. Fans looking for exclusive access to drivers, cars and entertainment will want to purchase the Total Access Pass, which includes access to the NASCAR Drivers' Meeting, Pre-Race Pass, a reserved seat in the Main Grandstand or Turn 2 Terrace and FanVision controller rental.
Throughout the pre-race show, Sonoma Raceway will honor first responders and local heroes as part of its "Sonoma Rising" program, an initiative to honor those affected by the devastating wildfires that ravaged the North Bay in October.

Sports Prep Star -- Maddy Denner
Oak Ridge-El Dorado Hills -- Track & Field -- Senior
|
Talk about delivering on the hype! With a little less than a month left in the 2018 track and field season, SportStars magazine and the Sacramento River Cats collaborated to award Maddy Denner the V Award, an award founded by the River Cats to honor the Sac-Joaquin region's high school female athlete of the year. Denner didn't let us down. At the CIF State Track and Field Championships on June 2-3 in Clovis, Denner (pictured above, #1) defended her state title in the 1600 meters in a time of 4 minutes, 42.77 seconds. That was just fast enough to best section-rival Olivia O'Keeffe of Davis by less than a second. In the 3200 meters, the Michigan-bound Denner would take a bittersweet runner-up finish when she finished 1.24 seconds behind her twin sister, Elena. Their results helped catapult the Trojan girls to a second-place team finish behind Southern Section-power Serra-Gardena. Photo credit: James K. Leash. Courtesy Sportstars magazine. |
