The Magnificent Five. Media Day for the Golden State Warriors took place on Monday, September 24 at the Rakuten Performance Center in downtown Oakland. Pictured, left to right: Draymond Green (23), Stephen Curry (30) , Kevin Durant (35), DeMarcus Cousins (0) and Klay Thompson (11). Above, Cousins checks Durant's elbow for game worthiness.
Projected as the clear favorites to win another
NBA title, head coach Steve Kerr explained how the team should feel going into the 2018-19 season to Jeff Faraudo of the
San Jose Mercury News: "We are playing with some house money. We have won three of the past four championships. Our place in the history of the league is pretty secure. I don't think our guys should feel a ton of pressure. They should feel the importance of trying to do it again because this may be the last time we have this current iteration of the Warriors, given all the free agents and money crunch and everything else."

San Francisco 49ers 27 v. Los Angeles Chargers 29
Sunday's 29-27 loss by the San Francisco 49ers to the Los Angeles Chargers in Carson, California came with a price. Veteran left tackle Joe Staley, pictured above, suffered a left knee injury with about nine minutes remaining in the second quarter when 49ers quarterback C.J. Beathard was blocked into Staley's leg. On Sunday night, the 49ers advised they did not believe it was a serious ACL injury, but that Staley would undergo further tests on Monday. Also lost to a left knee injury was Niners wide receiver Dante Pettis, whose injury came on a punt return just two minutes into the game. San Francisco is now 1-3 on the season and will host the division rival Arizona Cardinals (0-4) at Levi's Stadium on Sunday, October 7. The game will be televised at 1:25 p.m. on FOX. San Francisco Giants 6 v. Los Angeles Dodgers 10
Giants rookie pitching sensation Dereck Rodriquez ended his first season with one of his shortest outings of the year but he remains a vital part of the Giants staff going forward. His 2018 totals were impressive, finishing with a 6-4 record and 2.81 ERA. Photo by Rich Yee.
|
Mid-season acquisition Manny Machado's RBI triple in the top of the eighth inning provided a lead the Giants could not catch, as Los Angeles pulled out a 10-6 win on Saturday afternoon at AT&T Park and remained locked in the playoff race with the Colorado Rockies. The Dodgers were assured of no worse than a Wild Card berth.

Now that the regular season has been completed in the American League, Davis and the A's (#5 seed) will travel to Yankee Stadium in the Big Apple to take on the New York Yankees (#4 seed) in the American League Wild Card Game, which will be televised this Wednesday, October 3 on TBS at 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time. The winner will travel to Boston to play the Red Sox (#1 seed) at Fenway Park in the American League Division Series (ALDS), starting on Friday, October 5. Cal Bears 24 v. Oregon Ducks 42
|
Cal linebacker Jordan Kunaszyk (59), seen here chasing Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert (10) in the first quarter, was a strong presence all night, totaling nine solo tackles, two assists, one tackle for a loss, and a forced fumble. It was a strong defensive effort by the co-team captain but not enough, as the Golden Bears fell to the visiting Ducks, 42-24.
|
Missed opportunities haunted the Bears all night, from overthrows, drops, to interceptions. The Ducks' defense scored twice, once on a fumble recovery and in the waning minutes of the game, a pick-six. Here Oregon's Ugochukwu Amadi (7) takes away the pass from Cal receiver Jeremiah Hawkins (10) in the third quarter. Cal now takes to the road to Tucson, meeting the Arizona Wildcats next Saturday evening at 7 p.m. Caption and photo by Ron Sellers.
|
Breaking away for a 28-yard touchdown run, Cal quarterback Brandon McIlwain (5) ended the night as the Bears' leading rusher with 123 yards. McIlwain's passing stats read 11 for 21 for 128 yards, one touchdowns and two interceptions. McIlwain finished as the first Cal quarterback to go over the 100-yard rushing mark in a game since Joe Kapp in 1958.

With the loss, Stanford also fell seven places in AP college football poll, from #7 to #14, and undefeated Notre Dame (5-0) rose two spots from #8 to #6. The Cardinal, with a respectable 4-1 record on the season, will host the Utah Utes in a Pac-12 matchup at The Farm in Palo Alto this Saturday, October 6, which will be televised on ESPN at 7:30 p.m. Pacific Time.
