Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green, uncompromising on his insistence not to lose, contributed 13 points, four rebounds and one assist in a scalding third quarter on Sunday, leading the Warriors to a decisive 121-94 victory over the Houston Rockets in their first-round playoff series. The Warriors now lead the series 3-1, with Game 5 to be played Wednesday evening at Oracle Arena at 7:30 p.m. A major concern is the status of the NBA's reigning MVP, Stephen Curry, who sprained his knee at the end of the second quarter. An MRI is scheduled for Monday. Photo by Rich Yee.

The best road-team in major league baseball? Pretty close, as right now the Oakland A's are flashing an impressive 7-2 record when away from their Coliseum digs. But they win at home as well. Above, A's catcher Stephen Vogt celebrates a seventh inning home run on April 16 that helped defeat the Kansas City Royals, 5-3.

Outside linebacker and defensive end Khalil Mack, the fifth overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft by the Oakland Raiders, has proven to be an outstanding selection. In 2015, Mack became the first, first-team All-Pro in NFL history to be elected in two different positions in the same year. Five-time Race Across America (RAAM) finisher Marko Baloh of Slovenia is hard at work preparing for his first RAAM appearance since his 2013 fifth place ride. Last year Baloh was on the road with RAAM as a crew chief and trainer for US rider Scott Ragsdale and in 2014 Baloh fought a close contest with Adam Bickett to win in the Race Across the West. Though Baloh will race in the under-50 age category, he'll be one of the more senior riders in this year's field at age 48. But he'll also be one of the most experienced and most accomplished racers; the Slovenian has been on winning two-rider teams, taking second in 2006's Enduro category and third in 2009 and 2011. By establishing the new NBA single-season record of 73 wins, the Warriors, led by the greatest jumpshooter in the history of the game, brought about a certain harmonic convergence in the basketball universe by contributing to the city of Oakland's already amazing basketball pedigree.
While some basketball purists argue that the inner-city basketball culture exhibited in today's NBA was born on the public courts of New York City, a bit of homework will produce a significant argument that the basketball courts in Oakland also played a critical role in bringing the game to its current eminence.
It is interesting, for example, to discover that the jump shots of the Warriors' Stephen Curry raining down in Oracle Arena have an origin born on public courts just a few miles away. A 6-foot-6 prep sensation named Don Lofgran, who developed his game at Mosswood Park and Oakland Tech High School, was the originator of today's jump shot. The former California high school Player of the Year, and two-time All-American at the University of San Francisco, took New York by storm at the 1949 National Invitational Tournament, college basketball's premier tourney in the 1940s, displaying his one-handed jump shot as he led the Dons to the title.
No less an expert than legendary coach Pete Newell, who was Lofgran's mentor at USF, said, "His jump shot was so new, the New York writers called it the 'kangaroo shot' ... They'd never seen anything like it."
Lofgran was 18 years old when Newell first saw him and his unusual shot in a junior-college tournament in Sacramento. "Lofgran was way ahead of his time," said Newell. "People give Hank Luisetti credit for the jump shot, but his was kind of a running one-hander. Lofgran got to the top of his jump before releasing the ball, and I mean nobody had a shot like that then."
Next, you'll discover that the emergence of the point guard in today's game, as best exemplified by the multiple talents of Curry, has deep roots on the playgrounds of Oaktown. Starting with Lester Conner on Fremont High's 1977 state-championship team, Oakland has been an incubator for the modern-day point guard, with a shiny new model emerging every few years. After Conner, the former Oregon State All-American who was a first-round draft choice of the Warriors in 1982, there was Brian Shaw, a pivotal piece of three NBA championships with the Lakers in the early 2000s. Then came greats like Gary Payton and Jason Kidd who revolutionized the position and could dominate games without scoring points. The latest shiny model is Damian Lillard, the NBA's 2013 Rookie of the Year. He emerged from the playgrounds of Oakland's Brookfield Village neighborhood to take the league by storm.
But before Oakland's amazing run of point guards, there was the player that set the cornerstone of Oakland's great basketball legacy: the one and only Bill Russell. The Warriors won their second NBA title last season, but when you consider that Russell won 11 titles over a 13-year career with the Boston Celtics, the Warriors' accomplishments may seem somewhat pedestrian in comparison. Although no one thought the Chicago Bulls' record of 72 wins in a season would ever be eclipsed, it is unlikely that Russell's 11 titles with the Celtics will ever be surpassed. Russell, the McClymonds High great, revolutionized basketball with his rebounding and shot blocking, changing the game from a horizontal to a vertical contest. In college, where Russell led USF to back-to-back NCAA titles, his dominance forced college officials to widen the lane from 6 to 12 feet and disallow offensive goaltending -- changes that were dubbed the "Russell Rules." He later became the first black coach in NBA history.
And speaking of championships and what some prognosticators are calling a potential Warriors dynasty, we can't forget Hall of Famer Jim Pollard. The "Kangaroo Kid" from Oakland Tech High helped lead pro basketball's first dynasty, the Minneapolis Lakers, to six championships during the late 1940s and early 1950s.
There are many more feats and players in Oakland's glorious basketball history too numerous to mention here. Suffice it to say that the Warriors' accomplishments are just deserts for a city that has contributed so greatly to the game of basketball.
