Draymond Green - 5-24-16 - Rich Yee
The Golden State Warriors sustained a resounding defeat on Sunday evening, losing to the Oklahoma City Thunder, 133-105, in Game three of the NBA's Western Conference finals in Oklahoma City. But they may have lost a pivotal player for Game four as well. The Thunders' Steven Adams was kicked in the groin by the Warriors' Draymond Green in the second quarter and Green was penalized with a Flagrant 1 foul. This is Green's second flagrant foul of the postseason and subject to League review. The violation could be determined to be sufficient for Green to receive a suspension for Game four and his loss would be a crippling blow to the Warriors' chances to win on Tuesday night, also on the Thunders' home floor.
Compounding the issue, the NBA just suspended the Cleveland Cavaliers' Dahntay Jones for one game for an equally suspicious whip of his arm into the groin of the Toronto Raptors' Bismarck Biyombo during a similar rebounding situation in Game three of the Eastern Conference finals.

(Green is pictured last year in a game versus the New Orleans Pelicans.)

The 2015 NBA champion Golden State Warriors were named Sports Team of the Year while Warriors Co-Executive Chairman and CEO Joe Lacob was named Sports Executive of the Year at the ninth annual Sports Business Awards at the Marriott Marquis in New York City's Times Square last Wednesday. The Warriors were previously named Sports Team of the Year in 2014. "Being named Sports Team of the Year and Sports Executive of the Year is a true testament to our 'Strength in Numbers' and the incredible group of people we have in our organization," said Lacob. "We are committed to being one of the top franchises in professional sports, and it's a true honor to be recognized for our efforts by the Sports Business Journal."

In the first inning of Friday night's game, Chicago Cubs center fielder Jason Heyward made a spectacular, diving catch off the bat of Giants outfielder, Denard Span. Heyward's momentum sent him crashing into the outfield wall, where he lay in pain, attended to by teammates and the Cubs trainer. After several minutes, Heyward stood and walked unsteadily to the Cubs dugout, to fan applause. An MRI later confirmed Heyward will miss 3-5 days due to a contusion near his right rib and hip area.

RAAM - 5-23-16
After last year's Race Across America (RAAM) and finishing second, David Hasse (USA), with his best time ever (8 days, 20 hours, 6 minutes, 14.16 mph average speed), lamented the commitment it takes to mount a serious RAAM effort and mentioned that 2015 would be his last Race. But within weeks of his strong effort, the four-time RAAM finisher reconsidered. "I struggled a little until September when I decided I was going to do it again." So Haase is back and insists (again) this is his last. "I already have my bikes and my RAAM van listed for sale," he revealed with a laugh. Haase is among the favorites for this 35th edition of RAAM, which starts June 14 and hopes to be the first US-born winner of the 3,000 mile coast-to-coast race since Allen Larson in 2003. "That was a pretty good race for us last year," Haase observed, "I know there's room for improvement, but I don't know how much. It's still down to how fast I can ride." Photo credit: Vic Armijo / RAAM Media.

All That Jazz

By Andy Dolich

In light of the ongoing magic carpet ride of the Golden State Warriors and the individual onslaught on the record book by the current NBA Most Valuable Player, the arguments over who is pro basketball's all-time greatest player are about as worthwhile as naming the No. 1 jazz performer.

In gyms and jazz joints, the only point that matters is, Can you play?

MJ, Dr. J, Big O, Magic, Kareem, the Iceman, Kobe, Hakeem, Tiny, Wilt, the Logo, Elgin, Bird, Russell, Duncan, Moses, the Pearl and Cousy, every one of these maestros made his own music.

Billie Holiday, Charlie Mingus, Herbie Hancock, Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Buddy Rich, Sonny Rollins, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Etta James, Charlie Parker, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Cannonball Adderley, Nina Simone, Bessie Smith, Dave Brubeck, Wynton Marsalis -- if you are a jazz aficionado, tell me: Who is the absolute best ever from this group?

Thelonious Monk

Larry Bird

Stephen Curry is the NBA's MVP and MVI (Most Valuable Improviser). He bounces to lyrics, arcs, riffs, notes, glass kisses and angles that nobody else sees. He is hip with hops and chops.

Innovative instrumental artists and kings of the court follow the same path to greatness: their own. You can't GPS yourself to the summit of your craft. The ESP in becoming an MVP is in their DNA.

When these all-stars aren't being judged by the media, their contemporary challengers, stars of another time and fans, they are always working in some fortress of solitude, improving on skills that are already special.

NBA courts, no matter where the arena may be, are all the same: 94 by 50 feet with two 10-foot baskets. Over the years, hall-of-famers wrote their own masterpieces on different parts of the hardwood song sheet. There are no air right restrictions or speed limits in the NBA. A basketball arena, like a jazz club, is a three-dimensional world of creativity.

Wilt, Shaq, Bill Russell and Dikembe made the paint a place where you couldn't play any music in their house. Cousy, Stockton and Nash were happy to drop you a dime, with no questions asked. Magic, Bird, Iceman and Curry were riffing all over the court, like the best jazzmen.

The quintet on the courts resemble the great jazz groups of five. Stars don't shine as brightly without superior sidemen of skill. Talent and teamwork are in perfect balance when the magic begins.

Curry and the jazz all-stars always amaze. Steph has redefined the game. He plays the Spalding as a finely tuned instrument. He can launch from another zip code or lay the highest, softest, sweetest kiss higher off the glass that anyone's ever seen.

Every gig or game is an opportunity to create something never heard or seen before. That's what masters do. Even hardened veterans of the hardwood or jazz sessions know when a new frontier is being crossed. Curry just dropped 17 in OT on the Blazers after coming back from two weeks off with a knee injury. Miles Davis liked to say, "Don't play what's there; play what's not," or "You have to play a long time to be able to play like yourself."
.
The game, like the music, has seen many virtuoso performers who bring their audiences wonder, joy, surprise, tears, purity and beauty. Whether you are listening to Charlie "Bird" Parker or watching Larry Bird, there is a special sauce that these artists know how to whip up, lay down and spread out.

It does not matter whether you are Steph breaking ankles before launching a stepback three or John Coltrane wailing outside the musical lines, these hoop hipsters and musical magicians are the coolest cats. Whether the lights go up in the arena or down in some jazz cavern, these cats are pure and in a zone that others just dream about.

Andy Dolich has worked as an executive in all four major sports leagues, including the Oakland A's, Golden State Warriors and San Francisco 49ers. He is the managing director and head of U.S. sports practice for Odgers Berndstson, the UK's leading executive search firm, and director of career development for the University of San Francisco's online master's program in the business of collegiate athletics.
