Sadie - 7-11-16 - Michael Zagaris
The Ultimate Sports Guide had a very small hand in announcing the Oakland A's  game on Sunday, June 3, when they hosted the Pittsburgh Pirates at the Coliseum. (The A's would lose, 6-3.) Sadie Sprenkle, a precocious 10-year-old and granddaughter of an Ultimate Sports Guide staff member, was selected to announce A's players leading off the bottom of the third inning. Her selection was an Oakland A's Kids' Club perk, with participants chosen from the Club membership. Sadie, pictured above, was guided by the helpful hand of Dick Callahan, the A's public address announcer. Sadie articulated the names of Coco Crisp, Marcus Semien and Josh Reddick to perfection but sadly the inning ended too briefly, three-up and three-down! Photo courtesy of Michael Zagaris.

Is San Francisco Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner a competitor? We think the evidence is before us as Bumgarner is shown on the mound at AT&T Park on Sunday night, July 10, spinning a masterpiece against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Bumgarner would record a complete game and give up just one hit, as he continues to flirt with an illusive no-hitter and perfect game. Final score: Giants 4, Diamondbacks 0.  Photo by Rich Yee.

Ironman 70.3 Vineman is staged in and around the Sonoma County communities of Guerneville, Windsor and Healdsburg. The split transition race begins at Johnson's Beach, nestled in the redwoods of the town of Guerneville. The 1.2 mile swim out-and-back takes place in the calm, misty Russian River. Athletes transition to their bikes, setting out on the 56-mile course that winds through vineyards and quaint towns. The town of Windsor hosts transition Two, where athletes begin a challenging half-marathon with the finish line at Windsor High School. The course is a tour of Sonoma County's beautiful wine country, passing through four different grape growing regions: Russian River Valley Region, Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley, and Chalk Hill. RAAM
RAAM - 7-11-16
The comeback story of Race Across America (RAAM) 2016 is Dave Haase (USA), who finished second in the 3,060-mile race in a time of 9 days, 23 hours and 28 minutes, at an average speed of 12.82 mph. Haase had been in fourth place in Colorado when a lung issue he'd been suffering since Arizona worsened. His crew took him to a hospital where it was found he likely had a cold or slight lung infection. Haase was taken to a hotel for rest and antibiotics and when he resumed the race 17 hours later, he was back in 10th place. Feeling rejuvenated, he began passing riders and by the finish, some 2,100 miles later, he had battled his way up to second. "My crew kept saying, 'Keep working hard, let's see how much we can narrow the gap,' and that gap kept going down." While winner Pierre Bischoff (Germany) rode the pace he needed to keep ahead, Haase was setting the fastest average speed for many of the time stations and was closing on Bischoff. "If we had to race 5,000 miles we'd probably have won," he quipped at the finish.
