Martin "Honey Badger" Gruebele (USA) earned an impressive victory in the Race Across America (RAAM) men's 50-59 age category. With a finish time of 11 days, 0 hours and 49 minutes (11.59 mph average) he completed this year's 3,089-mile course a full 9 hours ahead of second-place racer Chris O'Keefe. That he rode such a calculated race should come as no surprise-the 52-year old is a physical chemist and biophysicist who is currently a Professor of Physics, Professor of Biophysics and Computational Biology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has published more than 200 articles in areas ranging from quantum computation to spectroscopy of high-energy molecules to folding of RNA in protein molecules in the test tube and inside cells. When asked at the finish if his work entered his head during RAAM he replied, "While I'm on the bike I'm actually thinking about science. I mean you have hours and hours and days and days. And I have all kinds of research ideas that I'm going to give my students the moment I get back to the university."   Photo and caption by Vic Armijo / RAAM Media.

The Tim Duncan and Nate Thurmond Way: Teamwork

By Andy Dolich

If someone were to ask me what is the most valuable quality an athlete should develop to thrive in today's manic, ever-changing sports world, I would put being a team player at the top of my list. In a business defined by teams, athletes, owners, fans and the media, the dynamics of creating a nurturing team environment are easy to talk about but a bitch to deliver on a daily basis. How many of the 122 teams in the Big Four sports can pass the teamwork test?

Business author and speaker Patrick Lencioni's new book, The Ideal Team Player, explores how to recognize and cultivate the three essential virtues of teamwork in an individual.

* Humility: No one in sports has ever won a Nobel Prize.
* Hunger: Be a lifelong learner; live your life through the windshield, not the rearview
   mirror.
* Smarts: As in "street" smart.

Star power is the fuel that runs the media engine of the NBA and our growing digital world. If one man's ceiling is another man's floor, then the dueling concepts of look-at-me versus look-at-my-team are played out every day in the headlines. The retirement of San Antonio's Tim Duncan and the passing of Warriors legend Nate Thurmond underscores the value of teamwork and the qualities that they lived, in all facets of their lives, as players and members of the community.

Tim Duncan, the Big Fundamental, born in St. Croix, Virgin Islands, came into the NBA in 1997 as the No. 1 pick after a four-year career at Wake Forest. He refused free agency in not moving to Orlando in 2000. Very few athletes stick with one franchise during a 19-year career. Four NBA titles with the San Antonio Spurs show the value of teamwork with his pals David Robinson, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and the maestro, Gregg Popovich. The Spurs became one of sports' model franchises, no matter the market size. When it was time to go, Tim Duncan just left. A wink, a nod and a goodbye.

Nate Thurmond defined cool whether it was trading elbows with Wilt Chamberlain and becoming one of the NBA's 50 greatest players or being a vital part of the San Francisco scene for decades after he retired. Many people literally had to look up to Nate, but Nate never overlooked anyone. He was the perfect fit for the Warriors and the unique vibe that is the San Francisco Bay Area.

When you think about the values of teamwork, quality and class, along with being humble, hungry and smart, the careers of Tim Duncan and Nate Thurmond are the shining stars of what a true teammate should represent.
