SF Giants - 8-1-16 - Rich Yee
San Francisco Giants pitcher Matt Cain experienced the highs and lows of a quality starting pitcher on Sunday. Cain pitched a no-hitter for five innings against the Washington Nationals but was lifted for a pitch hitter!  And his replacement? Another pitcher! But Madison Bumgarner quickly validated the decision with a ringing double and another pitcher then became involved. Jeff Samardzija was sent in as a pinch runner for Bumgarner and later scored. San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy (and a former catcher himself for 11 years) discusses game-time strategy with Giants All-Star catcher Buster Posey before their game against the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday, July 26, at AT&T Park. Laws of gravity prevented  San Francisco Giants center fielder Denard Span from leaping 20 feet higher and snagging the long drive off the bat of Cincinnati's Joey Votto in the top of the fourth inning. Instead, limited to a five-foot jump, Span crashed into the wall as Votto's ball sailed on for a home run and bounced off the head of the fan with his hands outstretched. (Ball is pictured.) Fleet-footed Oakland A's shortstop Marcus Semien eludes the tag of Houston Astros catcher Evan Gattis and scores the winning run on Josh Reddick's infield single for a walk-off 4-3 victory in the 10th inning on July 19. Surprisingly, Semien scored from second base on an errant throw by Houston's shortstop Carlos Correa.

Julian Eisenbeis
What do you do if you're an ultra-cyclist and geophysicist who wants to ride in the Race Across America (RAAM) but finds it impossible to train, since you work aboard a ship that searches for oil? If you're RAAM rookie Julian Eisenbeis (Germany) you bag the job, train your heart out and convince some of your friends to crew for you and go for it. Despite issues with an inflamed shin muscle, Eisenbeis had a strong finish and completed this year's RAAM of 3,080 miles in 11 days, 17 hours and 30 minutes (10.9 mph average) for a sixth place finish.

Eisenbeis arrived well before the RAAM start, spending time in the desert town of Borrego Springs, Calif. "I came here three weeks prior to the race to vacation and use the time to get adapted. At home 25C (77F) is a hot summer day. (Temperatures of 120F were experienced in the deserts of California and Arizona during this year's RAAM.) I wanted to see the the Grand Canyon and other things. We really enjoyed your country."  Photo and caption by Vic Armijo / RAAM Media.

$4 Billion Dollar
Tap Out

By Andy Dolich

Since the dawn of civilization hand-to-hand combat has been part of the human condition. The Roman gladiators were one of the first pro leagues to take advantage of the public demand for mayhem and that was 5,000 years ago.
Billion dollar purchase price tags for sports franchises are now part of the landscape. The Los Angeles Dodgers broke through at $2.1 billion followed by Microsoft's Steve Ballmer dropping $2 billion on the Los Angeles Clippers.
A recent Forbes magazine valuation of the Top 50 sports franchises shows these teams in the Top Ten:
Dallas Cowboys -- $4 billion
Real Madrid -- $3.65 billion
Barcelona -- $3.55 billion
New York Yankees -- $3.4 billion
Manchester United -- $3.3 billion
New England Patriots -- $3.2 billion
New York Knicks -- $3 billion
Washington Redskins -- $2.85 billion
New York Giants -- $2.8 billion
Los Angeles Lakers -- $2.7 billion
San Francisco 49ers -- $2.7 billion
The recent purchase of UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) for $4 billion dollars by WME/IMG (William Morris Entertainment/International Management Group) is a breakthrough moment in sports as just fifteen years ago the UFC was sold for $2 million dollars. The reason for this stratospheric inflation is that sports with multi-platform models are money magnets.
The savvy management team of Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta, along with their Zuffa management team, led by UFC president Dana White, have been as nimble and powerful as any of their fighters, when it comes to building the UFC brand.
UFC is the powerful engine for aggregating a dynamic combination of rights that made them blow past the competition.
Consider their Star Power:
Ronda Rousey has become a multi-media marvel. Think of her as the female "Rock"'
Conor McGregor
Brock Lesnar
Holly Holm
Jon Jones
Consider their offerings:
Gritty live events
Over-the-air TV on Fox
Reality TV with "The Ultimate Fighter"
Pay-per-view events
Millennial support
Global audiences
Video games
Additionally, future synergy with WME/IMG's stable of media superstars allows for cross promotion. It is more than ironic that UFC's new owner is headquartered in Beverly Hills.
New York , New York : In March UFC completed a ten-year project to get every state in the union to sanction their matches. Now the nation's largest market will be fertile ground for their growth when they debut at Madison Square Garden on November 12.
Technology-focused Silver Lake Partners, based in Menlo Park, is one of the most successful venture capital players, with investments totaling $24 billion dollars. Silver Lake Partners also backed WME when it purchased IMG in 2013 for $2.4 billion dollars.
UFC's $4 billion dollar price and the dynamics that led to the purchase made everyone in the sports business pay attention. This WME/IMG/UFC combination shows how sports and entertainment are looking through the windshield to maximize revenues in every live and digital space available.
If you're not sold on the power of the new UFC, they would be happy to introduce you to their CPO (Chief Persuasion Officer) Ronda Rousey. She'll be happy to meet with your sponsorship team to discuss business at the "Arm Bar."
