HP Coach Development Grant provides Sask coaches a world of opportunities

Gymnastic coaches Dana Brass and Chris Baraniuk watch an athlete as she practices on the beam.

A coach’s journey is never over. They are always looking for new ways of learning and experiences where they can grow, so that they can continue to help their athletes.

Thanks to the High Performance Coach Development Grant, Dana Brass and Chris Baraniuk have taken advantage of coaching opportunities across Canada and the world, exposing them to different strategies, skills and knowledge and turning them into better coaches.

Between the two of them is more than six decades of coaching — including stints with Cirque du Soleil — and it’s led both to their current positions at Marian Gymnastics in Saskatoon. Brass, who has been coaching since 1986, is the facility’s head coach, while Baraniuk, who transitioned to coaching after a successful career as a national team gymnast, is the assistant head coach.

Though their lengthy careers have involved coaching athletes at the provincial, national and international levels, the two coaches believe there is important value in gaining new experiences to improve their own skill sets.

Volunteers needed for 2023 Saskatchewan Winter Games

The Saskatchewan Winter Games are coming to Regina from Feb. 19-25, 2023 for the first time and they need volunteers to make the event a success.

The Games will require the assistance of approximately 1,000 volunteers throughout the week-long event. Every volunteer is important from helping at athlete's village to acting as a minor official at a sport competition to assisting with the setup and tear down of venues. All these efforts contribute to a successful Games experience for the over 1,500 young athletes.

There are roles for all ages, abilities and accessibilities, including opportunities for youth aged 13-17 to volunteer as well.

Saskatchewan's newest millionaires

A Saskatoon couple is $1 million richer thanks to the Nov. 11 WESTERN MAX draw. Daryl and Kim Cherry matched all the winning numbers — 1, 5, 24, 30, 36, 39, and 47 – to take home one of the draw’s $1 million prizes.

A few hours before the draw, Daryl purchased their ticket from Greystone Convenience Store at 2505 8th St. E in Saskatoon.

Daryl returned to the same store two days later and scanned his ticket using the self-checker. He was astounded by what he saw — a $1 million windfall!

“When I scanned my tickets, I thought I broke the machine!” Daryl explained. “I didn’t believe it!”

Member tip — Beyond fuel as food: Exploring women athletes' relationship with food

How do sporting cultures shape athletes’ relationship with food and their bodies? Importantly, how do women athletes navigate this relationship and what do they have to say about it?

The Sport Information Resource Centre has created a blog that discusses the implications of framing food as “fuel” and eating as “fuelling.” On the one hand, thinking of food as fuel encourages athletes to consume food to support their athletic training and may help prevent restrictive eating. On the other hand, thinking of food as solely “fuel” suggests that the athlete’s body is merely a machine. Finally, “food as fuel” shifts the focus away from other ways of relating to food.
