Keely Shaw and Julie Kozun come from different places and compete in different sports, but they have one thing in common – 2016 wheelchair basketball Paralympian Erica Gavel.
“Erica came up to me in the gym one day when I was working out and said she had heard my story,” said Shaw. “And that passing conversation in the gym essentially changed my life.”

Schmitz and Taylor skate to November Athlete of the Month honours | |

After winning international gold, Regina figure skating pair Ashlyn Schmitz and Tristan Taylor have earned the Sask Sport Athlete of the Month award for November.
At the International Skating Union’s 2022 Ice Challenge in Gzar, Austria from Nov. 11-13, Schmitz and Taylor put up a score of 110.69 to win gold in the junior pairs event. The result not only qualified them for the 2023 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships set for Jan. 9-15 in Oshawa, Ont., but the score ensured they are eligible for the ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships, set for Feb. 27 – Mar. 5, 2023 in Calgary, pending the outcome at nationals.
Schmitz and Taylor were nominated by the Skate Canada – Saskatchewan.

- Holly Kozan, Ringette, nominated by Ringette Saskatchewan
- Moktar Said, Athletics – cross country, nominated by Saskatchewan Athletics

Lacrosse coach Don Larson receives Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal | | |

Better known by his players as ‘Calm Don’ for his easy-going demeanour behind the bench, Don Larson has accomplished plenty in 23 years of coaching lacrosse in Regina and surrounding area.
“The success I’ve had is a credit to the athletes that I’ve been able to coach,” he said.
Larson has been coaching lacrosse since 1999, working with more than 65 teams and 1,100 athletes over that span. And this past week, he was recognized for his dedication to the sport, as a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal.

Volunteers needed for 2023 Saskatchewan Winter Games | |

The Saskatchewan Winter Games are coming to Regina from Feb. 19-25, 2023 for the first time and they need volunteers to make the event a success.
The Games will require the assistance of approximately 1,000 volunteers throughout the week-long event. Every volunteer is important from helping at athlete's village to acting as a minor official at a sport competition to assisting with the setup and tear down of venues. All these efforts contribute to a successful Games experience for the over 1,500 young athletes.
There are roles for all ages, abilities and accessibilities, including opportunities for youth aged 13-17 to volunteer as well.

Sport: Celebrate, Learn and Inspire in Saskatchewan | |

The 2022 Saskatchewan Sport Awards are quickly approaching as the event will be held Thursday, Jan. 26 at TCU Place in Saskatoon with celebrity guest emcee Tara Slone.
Tara will also be hosting the Women in Sport Breakfast the next morning, Friday, Jan. 27 also in Saskatoon.
A hotel room block has been reserved at the Hilton Garden Inn for the weekend. The room block is available from Jan. 26-28. The rooms are available on a first come, first serve basis and available until Dec. 27.

In the pre-Internet world, accessibility focused primarily on addressing physical barriers, such as by installing ramps or adding Braille buttons in elevators.
Over time, an evolution has happened in what’s considered a disability.
This Sport Information Resource Centre blog suggests strategies for coaches and sport organizations to prioritize and improve accessibility, specifically involving technology and communications.
