January Athlete of the Month
Selection to the Egyptian National Open Water Swim Team for the FINA World Championship led to Regina-based swimmer Kareem Tarek Mohammed being awarded the January Athlete of the Month.

Mohammed, who co-captains the University of Regina Cougars swimming team, travelled home to Egypt in December to compete in the national team 10-kilometre trial event, finishing in second. He received the letter informing him that he’d made the Egyptian team in January.

The FINA World Championship will take place in July 2023 after being postponed from May 2022 as a result of COVID-19.

Mohammed was nominated by Swim Saskatchewan.
Olympics wrapping up, Paralympics on deck
With 12 days of Olympic action in the books, Saskatchewan athletes have turned in some stellar performances and there's still more to come in the final days of the Games in Beijing.

Regina snowboarder Mark McMorris has the only medal for the province so far, capturing bronze in the men's slopestyle competition for the third straight time on Day 3. He followed that up with a 10th-place finish in the big air competition on Day 11.

In long track speedskating, Moose Jaw's Graeme Fish finished sixth in the men's 10,000-metre event while making his Olympic debut and White City's Marsha Hudey, competing in her third Winter Games, finished 21st in the women's 500-metre.

At the hockey rink, Saskatoon's Emily Clark and the Canadian women's team will go for gold against the United States in the Olympic final on Wednesday, Feb. 16 at 10:10 p.m. (SK time). Unfortunately, Prince Albert's Adam Cracknell and the Canadian men's team lost to Sweden in the quarter-finals on Day 12 and were eliminated.

Still to come, three-time Olympian Ben Coakwell of Moose Jaw will compete in the men's four-man bobsleigh event beginning on Day 15.

Meanwhile, on the Paralympic side of things, the Saskatchewan contingent continues preparation for the Games running March 4-13.

Biggar's Lisa DeJong will make her Paralympic debut in Beijing after she was recently announced as a member of the Canadian Para snowboard team.
