Sask contingent set for Olympic Games
After a lifetime of hard work and dedication to sport, 12 individuals from Saskatchewan will represent Canada at the Olympic Summer Games July 23 to August 8 in Tokyo.

The Saskatchewan contingent includes one official, two support staff, three coaches and six athletes with ties to the province.
Pike Lake’s Rylan Wiens, who will compete in the 10-metre platform diving event, headlines the group. Other athletes include softball outfielder Jenny Gilbert, pole vaulter Anicka Newell, swimmer Cole Pratt, boxer Tammara Thibeault and alternate for the artistic swim team Kenzie Priddell

The athletes will be joined by three coaches who have attended multiple Olympic Games between them. The group includes Lisa Borgerson (pistol), Lisa Thomaidis (women’s basketball) and Mary Carroll (diving). Support staff Rhonda Shishkin (women’s basketball), Graham Olson (swimming) and official for women’s soccer Chantal Boudreau will also be attending the Games in Tokyo.

You can find the full schedule for Saskatchewan's athletes and coaches, as well as results at cheeronsask.ca. And keep an eye out for daily recaps.

Pandemic impact on girls in sport
Canadian Women & Sport has created a report about the impact the COIVD-19 pandemic has had on girls participating in sport.

Within sport, COVID-19 has resulted in huge revenue losses and deep cuts to programming. Every individual involved in sport, from leaders to athletes to coaches, at all levels of sport, felt these changes. But, the impact of those changes were likely not be experienced equally by all.

Reviewing sport participation statistics from before COVID-19, fewer girls participated in sport compared to boys and girls experienced unique barriers to sport.

The Pandemic Impact on Girls in Sport report, which collected data from over 5,000 Canadian families, shows that 1 in 4 girls are not committed to returning to sport. If we don’t act now to counter this trend, we might realize a new normal of over 350,000 girls sitting on the sidelines in the post-COVID-19 world.
Member tip: Using Land Acknowledgement statements
Sask Sport, in collaboration with the Indigenous Sport Leadership Council (ISLC), has created Land Acknowledgement statements for use at virtual or in-person events or meetings by the amateur sport community in the province.

The examples available for your reference are in place to provide guidance on the use of inclusive and respectful language to acknowledge the traditional territories of Indigenous people throughout Saskatchewan. Land Acknowledgements are just one of many ways the sport community can support Truth and Reconciliation.

Meaningful delivery, the intent and education on “why” the Land Acknowledgements are supported is the most important aspect of this act of reconciliation. Before using a Land Acknowledgement at a meeting or event, please reflect on the reasoning why, how it will be delivered and the importance to you as an individual and organization. Members of the ISLC expressed their appreciation and how the power of hearing intentional acknowledgements honors the Indigenous community.
