Remembering former Sask Sport board member and president Don MacAulay

Sask Sport President Don MacAulay poses for a picture

Sask Sport is deeply saddened by the loss of former board member and president, Don MacAulay.

He was retired civil servant who worked most of his career in sports, culture, recreation and parks, in positions that varied from program delivery to executive management. Don served on the Sask Sport Board of Directors from 2004-08, including his time as president in 2006-07.

Previously, Don had been nominated by the Saskatchewan Camping Association to sit on the Sask Sport board in 1972 but stepped down from the board when he accepted a position with the Department of Culture and Youth.

He was a member of the first site selection committee for the 1972 Saskatchewan Games and served as missions staff in 1974, 1976, 1978 and 1980. He also was a director for the Saskatoon Hilltops Football Club from 1980-83 and coached minor football from 1984-90.

After his time on the Sask Sport board, Don continued to be a welcomed presence in the Regina office. Whether it was friendly conversations in the halls or providing his expertise for new projects, he was a positive influence on everyone around him. Don continued to give his time to the community, including Parkinson’s disease education and fundraising.

Don’s obituary can be read here.

Member tip: How to write a quality grant application

For many non-profit sport organizations, funding is a main topic of discussion. And two questions are routinely asked when it comes to continuing their missions or potentially creating new, innovative and inclusive programming:

  • How much money do we need?
  • Where is the funding going to come from?

The financial pressures of operating, keeping staff employed and running impactful programs have always been a challenge, adding to this stress are the additional financial pressures of COVID-19, which continue to be incredibly difficult to overcome.

One way for sport organizations to help ease their financial burden is by applying for grants.

The Sport Information Resource Centre has compiled a list of tips to help organizations when applying for those grants.
