Volunteers are the lifeblood of the amateur sport community.

From April 16-22, the dedication of volunteers will be recognized in the province and across the country during National Volunteer Week. The national theme for this year is “weaving us together”.

Follow Sask Sport's social media and website during the week as we highlight some of the volunteers from Saskatchewan's amateur sport system.

To assist in thanking volunteers during the week, Sask Sport has created assets including social media templates, email thank you notes and thank you cards for organizations to use. The assets can be found in the Resource Library on sasksport.ca.

After winning two gold medals and setting two school records at the U SPORTS Track and Field Championships, Usheoritse Itsekiri has been named the March Athlete of the Month.

Isaiah Gauthier was living out his dream, skating in an arena that was once home to his favourite hockey team – the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The nine-year-old Martensville product recently went to the Canadian National Blind Hockey Tournament held at the Toronto’s Mattamy Athletic Centre – formerly known as Maple Leaf Gardens.

“It was so fun,” said Isaiah. “The people there were so kind.” 

Sask Sport is hosting a pair of virtual Respect in Sport training workshops for new administrators as well as those who feel they need a refresher.

The workshops are scheduled for Wednesday, April 26 at 1:30 p.m. and Thursday, April 27 at 10:00 a.m. and will last approximately 30 minutes.

The Saskatchewan Games Council is looking to fill a Director at Large position on their Board of Directors for a two-year term starting in June 2023.

Hockey Saskatchewan is seeking three individuals to join its Board of Directors for three-year terms at their AGM on June 20, 2023.

The ideal candidates will love hockey and have experience in either risk management, accounting, finance, legal, or have previous governance experience.

Merv Easton’s morning routine received an instant jolt on April 2 – and it wasn't from the caffeine. Easton, a Pike Lake local, checked his WESTERN 649 ticket for the April 1 draw and discovered he won $2 million.

“On Sunday mornings I like to get up, make myself coffee and check my lottery tickets,” he said while claiming his ticket.

“I checked this ticket and had to do a couple double-takes,” he laughed. “Then, I got up, put on some loud music and did a little dance around the living room!”

The landscape of Canadian sport is populated by thousands of membership based nonprofit organizations. In the sporting context, membership organizations are ones in which members pay fees motivated by their interest to participate in their chosen sport (for example, a Masters athlete paying dues to a local track club). As result of that financial investment, they gain access to the benefits of coaching, organized practices and officiated competitions.
