2019 Saskatchewan Sport Awards

Sask Sport is now accepting nominations for the 2019 Saskatchewan Sport Awards, which celebrate the outstanding dedication and achievements of our province’s athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers. Nominations can be submitted by any active and affiliate member of Sask Sport. Categories include: Athlete of the Year Awards (Male, Female, Youth-Male, Youth-Female, Master and Team categories) Coach of the Year Award Coach Dedication Awards Volunteer Awards Official Awards The deadline for nominations is midnight on Dec. 6. Future Best Program

Do you have an athlete that qualifies for the Future Best program? If so, don’t miss the Dec. 1 application deadline. Future Best is designed to assist athletes involved in an intense level of training and competition. The program assists those who have the personal goal and realistic potential to become a National Senior Team member, but who have yet to reach carded status or be named to a National Senior Team. Application procedure: Provincial Sport Organizations (PSO) are responsible for nominating athletes who meet the criteria through Sask Sport’s online funding portal. Athletes must fill out the online application and the PSO provide approval by the Dec. 1 deadline. The Future Best and Awards Committee will review applications and Sask Sport will notify athlete and PSO of the results.

Athlete of the Month Award

After setting World and Canadian records at the Disabled World Water Ski Championships, Saskatoon’s Nolan Barnes has been named Sask Sport’s September Athlete of the Month. Barnes set the world record in the MP2 Slalom and a Canadian record in the MP2 Jump at the 2019 Disabled World Water Ski Championship in Skarnes, Norway, this summer. His records were ratified in September. READ MORE

Grant Opportunity: 2020 WISE Fund Program   There’s still time to apply for support through 2020 Women in Sport Engagement (WISE) Fund program.  This initiative, from the Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women and Sport and Physical Activity (CAAWS), will provide $2,500 grants to 30 organizations that are advancing gender equity in Canadian sport.

Congrats, Colette!

Ten-time Paralympian Colette Bourgonje is continuing to receive national acclaim. Last month, the athlete, mentor and role model from Saskatchewan was inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame. Later this month, she will be inducted into the Canadian Paralympic Hall of Fame. Congratulations to Colette, whose medal-winning performances in summer and winter games continues to inspire!
