Pair of gold medals earns Ryan Rousell October Athlete of the Month honours | |

Asquith’s Ryan Rousell won two gold medals at the 2022 International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation Wheelchair Fencing Americas Championship, earning him the Sask Sport Athlete of the Month award for October.
Rousell won gold in the Category A Men’s Sabre event and followed that up with another gold in the Category A Men’s Epee event, which was held Oct. 22-25 in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
In the sabre event, Rousell, who was the top seed heading into competition, upgraded his silver medal finish from 2018, beating Brazil’s Kevin Damasceno 15-8 in the 2022 final.
The following day in the epee event, Rousell beat Brazil’s Nielson de Oliveira 15-11, winning his second gold medal in as many days.
Rousell was nominated by the Saskatchewan Fencing Association.

Sydney Daniels becomes first Indigenous woman in Winnipeg Jets hockey ops | |

After spending most of the last eight years in the women’s hockey program at Harvard, Sydney Daniels was craving a new challenge. However, she didn’t quite know what that would look like.
“I had these skillsets that I built at Harvard and became very good at, so I didn’t know where or how I could fit that in an organization,” said Sydney. “I started talking to a few different NHL teams and that process of figuring out what (jobs) were open, what it would look like, I think it narrowed down my options.”
Through a connection made by her father Scott Daniels, who grew up on the Mistawasis Nêhiyawak First Nation in Saskatchewan before going on to play nine seasons professionally, Sydney met with Winnipeg Jets assistant general manager Larry Simmons at a coffee shop in Boston. The two met for an hour and a half, when it became clear to Sydney what her new goal was and where she wanted to be.

Sport: Celebrate, Learn and Inspire in Saskatchewan | |

The 2022 Saskatchewan Sport Awards are quickly approaching as the event will be held Thursday, Jan. 26 at TCU Place in Saskatoon with celebrity guest emcee Tara Slone.
Tara will also be hosting the Women in Sport Breakfast the next morning, Friday, Jan. 27 also in Saskatoon.

There’s also still time to get your nominations in for the Excellence Awards, including Male and Female Athlete of the Year, Youth Male and Female Athlete of the Year, Team of the Year and Coach of the Year.
The purpose of the Excellence Awards is to recognize and celebrate the outstanding event performances or a series of performances a Saskatchewan athletes, coach or team has achieved within a calendar year (January - December).
Nominations are due December 20 at 11:59 p.m.

Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada sessions | |

The Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada (SDRCC) is hosting two free sessions in Saskatoon. Each will be 60 minutes and are free for Sask Sport members to attend.
The sessions are scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 24 from 1:00 to 3:15 p.m. at the Delta Saskatoon Downtown (405, 20th St. East).
- Session 1: Building Sound Team Selection Policies
- Participants will learn a four-step process in developing selection criteria as well as important considerations in carrying out a fair selection process.
- Session 2: Welcome to the Team
- Shifting trends in Canadian law for assessing sexual harassment, unwelcome comments or conduct and what this means for sports organizations.

The SCRCC is also hosting a Mediator and Arbitrator Conference at the Delta Saskatoon Downtown on Friday, Nov. 25, which is open to the public.
In partnership with the ADR Institute of Saskatchewan, the program features presentations and panel sessions by guest speakers, including SDRCC arbitrators, mediators, clients, and collaborators.

Women and Leadership Workshops | |

Sask Sport is partnering with Saskatchewan’s seven Sport, Culture and Recreation districts to offer free virtual Women and Leadership workshops, covering unique topics, with four workshops still to come in November and December.
All workshops begin at 7 p.m.

Spotlight Grant application deadline approaching | |

Canadian Women & Sport’s Spotlight Grant aims to shine a light on girls, women and gender-diverse individuals who typically don’t get the access, support, or funding they need to fully participate in sport and physical activity.
The Spotlight Grant is for community sport and physical activity organizations who are working to remove barriers and expand opportunities for girls, women, and gender-diverse participants from the following communities:
- 2SLGBTQIA+
- Black
- Indigenous, First Nations, Inuit, Métis, other
- Low-income
- Persons with a disability
- Newcomers (in Canada 5 years or less)
- Racialized
To be eligible for the Spotlight Grant, a minimum of 80% of participants in the initiative must identify with or belong to the communities listed above.
Applications close Monday, Nov. 14 at 10 p.m.

Saskatchewan's newest millionaires | |

Stacey Lamothe’s week started off by discovering that he was $1 million richer and it only got better from there.
Two days after claiming his prize, the Meadow Lake resident and his wife welcomed a baby girl.
“I finally got to sleep last night,” he laughed while picking up his cheque. “I wasn’t sleeping right after I won or right after the baby was born.”

Walter Rokosh is one of two Saskatchewan individuals who won $1 million MAXMILLIONS prizes on the Oct. 14 LOTTO MAX draw.
"My head was spinning," said the Regina resident while claiming the prize. "I had to look at all the zeroes."
Rokosh added that this win couldn't come at a better time as he and his wife are planning to retire.

Member tip: STOPS to violence | |

Join STOPS to Violence on Tuesday, Nov. 15 for “Network Exchange” to learn more about accessing trainings, resources and legal advice available for people who have experienced violence in the workplace.
Presenters include:
- Crystal Giesbrecht and Jo-Anne Dusel from Provincial Association of Houses and Services of Saskatchewan (PATHS), who will speak to their upcoming online training on effective Response to Violence in the Workplace.
- Hillary Peterson from the Public Legal Education Association of Saskatchewan (PLEA), who will speak about two of their projects that offer legal advice and resources to people who have experienced workplace sexual harassment, as well as family violence.
The Network Exchange is a monthly online forum to support learning and information sharing about initiatives and resources that contribute to addressing gender-based violence in Saskatchewan.
