Sport: Celebrate, Learn and Inspire in Saskatchewan | |

Mark your calendars! The Saskatchewan Sport Awards are back – and in person – on Thursday, Jan. 26, 2023 at 6:30 p.m. at TCU Place in Saskatoon.
The annual awards program celebrates the achievements and dedication of individuals in Saskatchewan’s amateur sports community in 2022. Six Excellence Awards will be handed out, including Male and Female Athlete of the Year, as well as seven Recognition Awards for deserving recipients who show dedication to volunteering, coaching and inspire through sport.
And this year – Tara Slone will be the celebrity guest emcee!
The award-winning host will also lead a Women in Sport breakfast panel while in Saskatoon on Friday, Jan. 27. Slone will be joined by other female leaders in varying sport roles. This event will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn in Saskatoon.

What is a classifier? And the important role in plays in Paralympic sport | |
Julie Bakke’s role as a classifier is simple – to ensure integrity in sport.
“We’re out to make sure it’s fair for everyone and we’re doing the best job possible for the athlete,” said Bakke.
But what exactly is a classifier?
“Ultimately classification is there to try and help minimize the impact of the disability to allow (athletes) to participate,” said Bakke, who was one of two classifiers from Saskatchewan selected to attend the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
A classifier’s job is to determine eligibility for athletes in Paralympic sports while helping maximize the athlete’s potential within the rules of the system. Their role is to not hinder the athlete’s progression but instead to determine where they fit, making it fair for everyone.

Women and Leadership Workshops | |

Sask Sport is partnering with Saskatchewan’s seven Sport, Culture and Recreation districts to offer free virtual Women and Leadership workshops, covering unique topics, with six workshops still to come in November and December.
All workshops begin at 7 p.m.

Spotlight Grant accepting applications | |

Canadian Women & Sport’s Spotlight Grant aims to shine a light on girls, women and gender-diverse individuals who typically don’t get the access, support, or funding they need to fully participate in sport and physical activity.
The Spotlight Grant is for community sport and physical activity organizations who are working to remove barriers and expand opportunities for girls, women, and gender-diverse participants from the following communities:
- 2SLGBTQIA+
- Black
- Indigenous, First Nations, Inuit, Métis, other
- Low-income
- Persons with a disability
- Newcomers (in Canada 5 years or less)
- Racialized
To be eligible for the Spotlight Grant, a minimum of 80% of participants in the initiative must identify with or belong to the communities listed above.
Applications close Mon., Nov. 14 at 10 p.m.

CPRA Reaching Each and Every One: A Community Intervention | |

The Canadian Parks and Recreation Association (CPRA) has developed a new program to help make recreational sport more accessible to everyone, thanks to funding from the Government of Canada's Community Sport for All Initiative.
Titled “Reaching Each and Every One: A Community Sport Intervention”, this project will support the prompt initiation of community level interventions on programs, events, and/or policy changes that remove barriers and increase recreational sport access, participation and retention rates for equity deserving groups.
Grants up to $50,000 are available. The application deadline is Nov. 10.

Saskatchewan's newest millionaires | |

Fifty-two friends are making history as the largest group to claim a single lottery prize in Western Canada after taking home a $1 million MAXMILLIONS prize on the August 5 LOTTO MAX draw.
Ashley Sieben, who claimed the prize on behalf of the 51 other group members, says he didn’t realize they had won until another member of the group called him.
“Check your tickets! We won, we won!” the other group member told Ashley. “We won a million dollars!”
The group will share the prize money evenly, netting each member $19,230.76 and Sieben noted each person has a different plan for spending their winnings.

Terry (Terance) Thorsteinson already knows how he wants to celebrate his recent $1 million windfall.
“I would like to take my million in cash and roll in it,” he laughed while claiming his prize from the Oct. 4 LOTTO MAX draw.
The Regina resident picked up his ticket from Lorne Drugs at 2255 14th Ave. in Regina a few hours before the draw.
A couple of days later, he returned to store and scanned his ticket using the self-checker. After seeing the number on the screen, he went right over to the cashier to confirm what he was seeing was true.
