A group of 26 outstanding athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers and teams are finalists and recipients for the nine different categories at the 2022 Saskatchewan Sport Awards.



The 18 finalists across the six Excellence categories includes Olympian and Paralympians, as well as national and international medallists. There are eight others who will be presented with Recognition Awards.

Also – tickets are still available for the Saskatchewan Sport Awards (Jan. 26) and the Women in Sport Breakfast (Jan. 27) with both events being held in Saskatoon. 

With six gold medals in six events, para swimmer Nikita Ens has been named the Sask Sport Athlete of the Month for December.

At the Ken Demchuk International Invitational in Vancouver from Dec. 16-18, Ens won first place in all six events she competed in, including the 50-metre breaststroke, 50-m backstroke, 50-m freestyle, 100-m freestyle, the 200-m freestyle and the 150-m individual medley.

After a banner year in 2022 with plenty of international success, figure skating duo Ashlyn Schmitz and Tristan Taylor are hoping to carry that momentum into 2023. 

Among the highlights from previous year were gold medal finishes at the Skate Canada Challenge in Winnipeg and the Ice Challenge in Graz, Austria.

Schmitz and Taylor also finished with bronze at the Junior Grand Prix in Latvia in September. Now, they have their sights set on another top performance at the 2023 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships in Oshawa, Ont. from Jan. 9-15.

From there, the top teams will be selected to represent Canada at the ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships, set for Feb. 27 – March 5 in Calgary.

The Saskatchewan Winter Games are coming to Regina from Feb. 19-25, 2023 for the first time and they need volunteers to make the event a success.

The Games will require the assistance of approximately 1,000 volunteers throughout the week-long event. Every volunteer is important from helping at athlete's village to acting as a minor official at a sport competition to assisting with the setup and tear down of venues. All these efforts contribute to a successful Games experience for the over 1,500 young athletes.

There are roles for all ages, abilities and accessibilities, including opportunities for youth aged 13-17 to volunteer as well.

Volunteers are needed for the 2023 Skate Canada Challenge – Pre-Novice/Novice in Regina Jan. 25-28, 2023.

The online volunteer application closes on Jan. 13. 

Tim and Janet Beler’s 2022 ended on a high note after matching all seven winning numbers to one of the million-dollar prizes on the Dec. 30 WESTERN MAX draw. Their winning numbers were 5, 8, 16, 29, 32, 43 and 49.

The pair purchased their winning ticket from Save on Foods at 4520 Albert St. S in Regina on Dec. 28.

Tim discovered their win the morning after the draw on New Year’s Eve.



“After reading the paper, I checked all my lottery tickets on my phone app,” he explained.

“I didn’t believe it at first,” he said, adding that he scanned his ticket eight times before the win sunk in. “I sat there and then walked around as if someone hit me with a 2x4!”

As we age, our risk of falling increases and our risk of serious injury as the result of a fall also increases.

This blog by the Sport Information Research Centre outlines the importance of remaining physically active during aging to reduce the risk of falls. It also provides a description of at-home exercises that can help to prevent falls, as well as tips and resources for older adults to engage in physical activity at home and in their communities.
