Alexis Ashworth and Garrett Ostepchuk have Saskatchewan on the medal board at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, as each are set to return home with medals around their necks.
Ashworth, a weightlifter from Oungre, Sask. won the province's first medal of the games – a silver in weightlifting – on Monday, while Ostepchuk, who hails from Regina, starred on Team Canada's 3x3 wheelchair basketball team that claimed silver on Tuesday.
Ashworth and Ostepchuk are among nine athletes with ties to Saskatchewan contingent representing Canada, which also features four staff members. The other athletes include divers Rylan Wiens and Margo Erlam, boxer Tammara Thibeault, lawn bowler Jordan Kos, hurdler Michelle Harrison, pole vaulter Anicka Newell and wheelchair racer Jessica Frotten. Mary Carroll and Carla Nichols are serving as coaches with Team Canada's diving and athletics teams, respectively. Rounding out the staff members are Al Bodnarchuk, a massage therapist for the athletics team, and Graham Olson, a video analyst for the swimming team.
The Games got underway on July 28 with the opening ceremonies and will conclude with the closing ceremonies on Aug. 8.

Team Sask has announced the full contingent of athletes for the 19 sports that will represent the province at the 2022 Canada Summer Games in Niagara, Ont.
377 athletes, 88 members of the coaching staff, 19 sports, and 25 mission staff from 70 different communities across Saskatchewan comprise the 488 participants set to represent the province on the national stage.
Wrestler Angel Besskkaystare, a product of Wollaston Lake, was named as Saskatchewan's flag bearer for the Games and will lead Saskatchewan into the opening ceremonies on Aug. 6, with the Games running until Aug. 22.

Saskatchewan’s presence on the international women’s football stage started with three. Now, 12 years later 18 of the 45 players on Team Canada for the 2022 IFAF Women’s World Championship are from the province.
Emmarae Dale, Lauren Ferguson, Alyssa Funk, Haley Girolami, Danaye Holynski, Arden Kliewer, Betsy Mawdsley, Ricki Obed, Reed Thorstad, Ashley Viklund and Sarah Wright will represent the defending Western Women’s Canadian Football League (WWCFL) champion Saskatoon Valkyries on Team Canada, while Rebeka Koutsogiannopolous, Alex Kowalski, Kasey McCombs, Quinn Petrinchuk, Hailee Raffey, Shannell Rioux and Rae-Lynn Schaffer represent the Regina Riot.
Saskatchewan will also be represented by seven coaches from the province will occupy the sidelines. Marci Halseth and Cody Halseth are the team’s offensive and defensive coordinators, while Brenden Bennett (offensive linemen), Claire Dore (receivers), Pat Berry (linebackers), Olivier Eddie (defensive backs) and Beth Thompson (defensive linemen) will all serve as positional coaches.

Tony Cote Games come to a close |

Taking place for the first time since 2019, the Tony Cote Games made their return this past week.
The 2022 Tony Cote First Nation Summer Games were hosted by the James Smith Cree Nation in Saskatoon and seen archery, beach volleyball, canoe/kayak, golf, soccer and softball as the seven sport disciplines competed in at the Games.
Battlefords Agency Tribal Council finished with 49 medals – including 14 gold – the most of any of the participating teams.
The Games won't have to wait long to take place once again, with the 2023 Tony Cote First Nation Winter Games set to take place early next in Regina.

Indigenous Officials Mentorship program for 2023 North American Indigenous Games |

Applications are open for the launch of the Indigenous Officials Mentorship program for the 2023 North American Indigenous Games, which will be held in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Officials are invited to express their interest in taking part in the mentorship program, which aims to build upon and improve the opportunities for Indigenous officials.
Opportunities are available for swimming, badminton, basketball, canoe/kayak, athletics and volleyball officials.
Applications close Aug. 24.

The Sask Sport Resource Line (including e-support service) provides information, bilingual support, resources and referrals for sport in Saskatchewan regarding possible bullying, abuse, harassment, discrimination or hazing.
This confidential and anonymous resource, operating 365 days of the year from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m., is intended to assist callers in determining the most appropriate course of action to take.
The Sask Sport Resource Line staff is qualified to handle calls regarding child and youth maltreatment (national/provincial child and youth protection laws) and organization-specific risk management and dispute resolution models.

Nominations for the 2022 Tom Longboat Awards are now open |
|
Established in 1951, the Tom Longboat Awards are a symbol of prestige in Canadian sports.
The awards recognize a male and female Indigenous athlete for their contributions to sport in Canada.
Winners receive an all expenses paid trip with a family member to receive the award, a custom made award and a $1,500 bursary for athlete development.
Past recipients include Jocelyn Larocque, Michael Linklater and Kerri Einarson.
Nominations close Aug. 26.
